The Clark County Water Reclamation District in Las Vegas performs regular wastewater testing to understand the community health and prevent disease outbreaks. In collaboration with Verily, they put this into action during HLTH USA when 12,000 people attended the conference on the Strip. Wastewater samples from one week before to one week after HLTH were evaluated for pathogen concentrations. "The methods that we use include droplet digital PCR in order to identify the concentration levels and whether a pathogen is detected," said Amy Lockwood, Verily public health partnerships lead. NEW: A woefully inadequate voluntary bird flu testing program is leaving public health experts, farmers and workers, and the public in the dark about the spread of bird flu and without the tools we need to combat it, FarmSTAND Research Paralegal Sylvia Regan writes on our blog. Asking for volunteers and hoping for the best will never work when it comes to Big Ag, which will always choose to make a buck over any other consideration. Public health is on the line, and we need to build a food system that respects it. More: https://lnkd.in/dkZiFtnj

As the weather begins to warm up, the CDC's newly released resources are essential to learning about the harms of heat exposure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed and released a set of resources to help people stay cool, stay hydrated, and know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses. These resources can be utilized by health center staff to keep up-to-date on the impact high heats may have on the communities they serve. For ease of access, the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) has created a webpage for community health centers to access all the heat-related resources in one place. To explore these heat-related resources, visit this NACHC webpage: https://lnkd.in/gdT4vNk2 For a curated collection of Climate Change and Environmental Health resources, visit the CHAMPS website: https://lnkd.in/gtEm9KBS

Lizzie Ward: Managing Director SAS Water Ltd, guarding against Legionella and all waterborne disease
Good news from the USA. New Jersey is building awareness of Legionnaires' Disease. The State authorities say 269 people were diagnosed with Legionnaires’ in 2023, state officials said, and tragically there were 20 deaths. Experts suggest that the real impact of Legionnaires’ Disease could be two or more times greater than the number of diagnoses now recorded nationwide. Proposed new law would compel owners of public water systems to regularly update state officials with data reflecting their work. Hospitals, nursing homes, high-rise residential buildings, senior complexes, hotels, motels and various other commercial and industrial facilities would be required to develop water management plans designed to reduce the development and spread of #legionella bacteria. Awareness raising is vital. #watersafety #workplacewater Please see a link to the full article in the comment below. Our photo explains the law here in the UK.
