Dr. Patricia Nez Henderson was born in 1965 in rural Arizona and raised on the Navajo reservation there. She observed her grandfather, a medicine man, connect with patients who refused to seek treatment from the local Indian Health Service (IHS). By the time these patients sought formal medical help, their ailments were often too advanced to be treated effectively. She soon realized that these patients needed someone who understood their traditions and values while bringing the best of modern medicine to their lives. After earning her M.P.H. at the School of Public Health in 1994 (following a biochemistry degree at the University of Arizona), Nez Henderson experienced severe culture shock in medical school. As the lone Native student in a “room of men in white jackets,” she found the detached, clinical nature of the health environment to be a challenging barrier—and one that strengthened her point of view. In 2000, she earned her M.D. from Yale, and was the first recipient of an award in her name, which recognizes graduates committed to improving health among American Indian populations. She soon joined the faculty at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center as an assistant professor in the Division of American Indian and Alaska Native Programs. Through leadership roles in the American Indian Cancer Foundation 🏥 and as a public health researcher, Dr. Nez Henderson has spearheaded culturally tailored anti-tobacco programs in Native communities. Her work has led to impactful policy changes and educational programs, contributing to significant reductions in smoking rates and improved health outcomes among Native Americans. She currently resides in South Dakota, where she and her husband, Jeffrey A. Henderson, M.P.H., M.D., lead the Black Hills Center for American Indian Health in Rapid City. 🎨 Corey Begay (Diné) is an artist and graphic designer from Cedar Springs, AZ, on the Navajo Nation. Born on January 27, 1903, on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana, Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail (Crow-Sioux) overcame tremendous challenges to become a pioneer in healthcare. Orphaned at a young age, she supported herself by working as a nanny and maid while navigating discriminatory educational environments. In 1927, she made history as the first Crow, and one of the first Native Americans, to become a registered nurse in the United States 🏥. Her career began with the Indian Health Service (IHS) at the Crow Agency, where she worked to modernize healthcare for her people and combat the forced sterilization of Native American women. Over the decades, she traveled the country as a consultant, documenting healthcare disparities faced by Native Americans and advocating for culturally sensitive and accessible care. Her efforts highlighted critical issues like inadequate facilities, barriers to traditional healing practices, and forced sterilization. In addition to her advocacy, Yellowtail played a vital role in cultural preservation, touring internationally as part of the Crow Indian Ceremonial Dancers. In 1978, she was named the "Grandmother of American Indian Nurses," and she was posthumously inducted into both the Montana Hall of Fame (1987) and the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame (2002).
