Occasionally, it’s good to sneak a peek at how other states are faring in their efforts to digitize government services and become more citizen-centric. It could be inspiring and encouraging. In Hawaii, we must continue to carry our physical cards, but digital driver’s licenses and state identification cards are currently accepted at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint at the Terminal 1 Makai Checkpoint of the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Apple Stores in the U.S. and in select apps that require identity or age verification. Shawn Murphy from Gartner recently shared some steps when communicating change: - Provide clarity on the change: Explain what the changes are, why they are happening, and how these changes will impact your team. - Discuss the impact of the change on your team’s attitude and ability to do the work: Ask questions to explore how your team feels about the upcoming change, what makes the change difficult to implement, and what roadblocks do they anticipate. - Brainstorm possible solutions: Engage your team members by asking them what do differently to be more effective and what other information do they may need to make informed decisions. - Discuss next steps: Find out what types of barriers they anticipate, and how could we can collectively overcome them. How do you like to communicate change within your organization?

Just like adjusting a camera's aperture, changing our view can reveal the remarkable progress and potential in unexpected places. Hawaii's journey to modernize state government systems is a great example. While humility might make us critical of ourselves, stepping back reveals milestones worth celebrating. In the hustle of tackling challenges, we often focus too closely on what's wrong, missing the beauty right in front of us. Bill Kumagai, THG's Interim Executive Director, reminds us to take a step back and broaden our perspective.
