My name is Lauri and I am the founder of Toxic Workplace Project! If you are currently working in toxic environment, you are not alone! I understand your plight well as I am a survivor of bullying and toxic work environments in my career. I hold a Master of Science in Applied Organizational Anthropology from the University of North Texas and graduated first out of 500+ students in my cohort - good times! My (unfortunate) personal experience with bullying coupled with my formal education and experience working with organizations led me to create WBP and support those who are suffering at the hands of a bully. Understanding bullying within the context of organizational culture provides a unique view and holistic perspective which can offer great clarity to the dynamics at play.     WBP's #1 Ranked Post of the Year! Obsessed Much? Ewww. Micromanagement is such an intense and intrusive bullying tactic that needs to stop. Pronto. It's a classic method used by imposters leaders when they are turbo-boosted into desperate control and dominance measures because they feel acutely threatened. Hahaha - yup, they are threatened by the mere *idea* of you doing a good job on an assigned project. They must thwart your success at all costs and it all starts with micromanagement. What an absolutely psychotic thought process. None of it makes sense - but remember, you're not an emotionally unwell bully. The irony is that you were hired because you were deemed skilled, talented and competent for the role...so, why aren't they letting you run with the task, project, assignment...why? You know the answer. Insecurity breeds bullying. But the damage that is done when you are micromanaged is immense. It is soul-shattering. Demeaning. Suffocating. Stressful. It leads to high blood pressure. Self-doubt. Self-esteem issues. Hypervigilance. Mistakes. Confusion. Emotional overload. Decreased productivity. Micromanagement is the killer of all things positive. If a leader wants to absolutely demolish a person's enthusiasm, engagement in the team and willingness to do ANYTHING. Micromanagement is a shut-down mechanism. I can think of fewer methods to absolutely destroy a person's confidence. To all imposter leaders who do this: STOP IT. STOP IT NOW. Micromanagement is a form of psychological abuse and you are ABUSING your team when you use this method. Focus on abundance. Nobody is perfect and team members may need support to upskill if there are quality issues....this quite literally is where your skills as a leader are to be used. This is when you should be able to shine! Find positive ways to implement training, coaching and mentoring to lead the way to success. Micromanagement is scarcity-based, fear-based and used to control and dominate a person who wants to do their best. I will say it again - STOP IT.     Misery Loves Company! And with that in mind, I will share the following warning: PLEASE BEWARE THE PRE-VACATION, 4:30PM AMBUSH! Bullies and abusers are some of the most miserable people around - my goodness, to imagine them experiencing happiness, joy, gratitude or anything positive is, well, unimaginable. So, remember, they are miserable humans, stuck in scarcity mode and want everyone around them to be as miserable as they are. Therefore, allow me to introduce you to the inevitable pre-vacation, pre-holiday, Friday afternoon AMBUSH by an unwell, unhinged abusive bully. You've probably already experienced it - the breathless, last-minute, urgent DEMAND from the bully DEMANDING you work on an issue IMMEDIATELY, that MUST be completed before you start your workday/vacation. Hahaha, they deserve Academy Awards for their acting jobs. Spoiler alert: there isn't an issue that requires immediate attention. There isn't a problem that MUST be tended to before you start your holiday (but that allows THEM to start theirs!). They are making it all up to torture you. And they will laugh all the way out the door of the building knowing that you are stuck there with a pretend issue that requires you check-in with them and report back status until it is completed...which could take HOURS and delay the start of your vacation. These people are sick. Yes, this is a real tactic. Yes, it is a highly successful tactic. Start by asking early in the week/day before your expected time is to start if there is anything else that needs to be tended, anything on the radar. Stay in touch with the person bullying you and be proactive to try to avoid this situation. And, of course, BOUNDARIES. Be prepared to delegate if possible and implement your boundaries. They want to ruin your vacation/weekend. They want to keep you from starting your weekend/vacation. They want you to think about appeasing them all weekend/vacation.     It's Not Feedback.. ...it's an abusive tactic when done over time. I'm talking about relentless criticism. It must be exhausting to be an abusive individual. Imagine the goodness, the abundance, the wonderful work that could be accomplished if abusers adopted a healthy, abundance-focused mindset where they see the best in others rather than immediately home in on everything negative. It's soooo exhausting. But, welcome to the daily life of an abusive bully! They are going to rip on every move you make. You can deliver stellar work, and I have no doubt it is, and they will find a way to make it seem as though you are a bottom-feeder of the employer and that you aren't worthy of your job, your salary, your spot on the team, etc. Ignore. Please ignore this absolutely destructive ridiculousness. Strong leaders share feedback on an ongoing basis that is opportunity-based and focused on your growth and development. That's not the goal of a bully and they sure as heck have no idea what that last sentence I just wrote even means. They wouldn't be able to say a good thing about your work if they were forced to...they are allergic to goodness. Push back. Stand up for yourself. You have every right to defend your work, set expectations as to how and when YOU would like to receive feedback.     Once Bitten, Twice Shy! There is a really sad irony to the reality that imposter leaders get so annoyed and frustrated by the lack of engagement from their team members in the meetings that are so quiet you can hear a pin drop. They literally CREATED this environment! The team members who are now quiet and not speaking up are the ones who were once vibrant contributors, filled with innovative ideas that could make a REAL impact on the business! There was a curiosity that felt energetic and exciting and created a buzz around the office! And now, imposter leaders, you're complaining about the silence. The silence that is a direct result of your sponsorship of abusive behavior and bullying, and in many cases, your direct involvement. You have trained and groomed your precious employees to learn that speaking up has dire consequences - verbal beatings, belittling comments, harsh drive-by insults, dismissive responses, credit stealing...and on and on the list goes. And now you have the GALL to complain and moan and chastise those who are quiet because you want engagement? How dare you? Your precious employees are protecting themselves - as they should. The emotional and psychological abuse you have sponsored and allowed is harming them to the point that they KNOW that silence is the best option for them if they want to remain safe and unharmed in the abusive, toxic workplace YOU created. Stop abusing your employees. Stop sponsoring bullies who abuse your employees. Maybe then you'll see engagement and curiosity and innovation come to life.     Things That Make You Go "Hmmm!"... Bullies want to render you powerless - this is their end-goal. They are on a mission to take away your voice, your ability to function well at work, your ability to perform the tasks needed to maintain your livelihood...they are all on the table and bullies are experts at taking away your power. Or so they think. Only weak people need to tear others down to feel strong and good about themselves. Bullies are the weakest of the weakest of the weakest. You are IMMENSELY powerful.
