Apprenticeships are accelerating California’s economic growth — and the LAUNCH Apprenticeship Network is one of our grantees leading the charge. Last month, California announced an incredible $24.7 million investment in 65 registered apprenticeship programs, including healthcare and automotive initiatives supported by LAUNCH, to supercharge growth in non-traditional sectors across the state. This investment will help equip Californians with high-demand skills and open new career pathways across industries, while building a steady pipeline of skilled talent for employers. Governor Newsom has identified apprenticeships as a core strategy to create jobs and address income inequality and the state set a goal to serve 500,000 apprentices by 2029. To date, 190,915 apprentices have been served as California continues to be the nation’s leader in registered apprenticeships. To close out #NationalApprenticeshipWeek, we are highlighting the Institute for Local Government (ILG) as they launch Bridge, a pioneering pathway into public sector apprenticeships. ILG is committed to helping local agencies find solutions to address growing public sector workforce needs and help Californians from underrepresented groups gain new job skills and climb the ladder in the public sector. Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs) have been a staple in the public sector for decades, yet local government vacancy rates hover near 15%, impacting their ability to deliver vital services. A recent study from ILG found that nearly 70% of the state’s cities, counties and special districts experience challenges with recruitment and retention. ILG’s Bridge initiative was developed in partnership with California Community Colleges to address these needs and help local governments build their workforce pipeline through RAPs in non-traditional fields like human resources, accounting, IT, health and human services – while also expanding economic opportunity and career mobility for underserved and underrepresented populations. Research shows that RAPs offer higher retention rates than non-apprenticed career pathways and that apprentices advance faster than traditional hires, making it a win-win for employers and employees. ILG is thrilled to announce the launch of our Bridge Public Sector Apprenticeships Initiative! Bridge is designed to support California’s local governments in building their workforce pipeline through Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs) in “non-traditional” fields. This will help local governments hire for positions that are in high demand and notoriously difficult to fill, while also expanding economic opportunity and career mobility for underserved and underrepresented populations. #NAW2024 #DecadeOfNAW #ApprenticeshipUSA #ILG

Apprenticeships open doors to transformative careers, and Women In Non Traditional Employment Roles (WINTER) makes sure those doors are open to women seeking careers in construction. Women make up about 14% of active apprentices nationwide, and about 4.5% of apprentices in the construction trades. WINTER is the only gender-specific workforce development agency in Southern California. Their mission is to increase the percentage of women in the construction industry, working with low-income, justice-involved, survivors of domestic violence, women aging out of foster care, women of color and transgender women to attain the skills needed to be competitive in the workforce. Over the last 37 years, WINTER has helped thousands of program graduates secure union construction jobs – with a placement rate of over 80%. For three years after graduation, women receive support services that include union placement, childcare help and mentorship. We are proud to support organizations like WINTER that are dedicated to creating opportunities for women to lead, thrive and inspire in the skilled trades. Happy National Apprenticeship Week! We’re excited to join this nationwide celebration and highlight the successes and value of registered apprenticeships in fostering a stronger and more inclusive Los Angeles. Apprenticeships are a proven “earn and learn” model that combines paid on-the-job training with classroom or online schooling – providing hands-on experience, mentorship and practical skills that help pave the way to high-quality jobs. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, more than 90% of workers who complete apprenticeship programs retain employment, with an average starting salary of $80,000 and a lifetime earning advantage of $300,000 more than their peers. Our Pathways to Good Jobs portfolio supports organizations committed to providing skills-building, training and tools that expand access to good jobs and fulfilling careers for all Angelenos. In honor of #NationalApprenticeshipWeek, we’re proud to spotlight some of the organizations making a positive impact in Los Angeles. 🔹 Per Scholas Los Angeles equips individuals from underrepresented communities with the skills to thrive in the fast-growing IT and cyber-security fields; their national network has helped over 25,000 of their graduates launch careers in tech. 🔹 GROWTH SECTOR opens pathways to STEM careers through innovative apprenticeship partnerships with industry leaders in engineering and advanced manufacturing. 🔹 Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC) supports justice-impacted individuals through the Los Angeles Second Chance Apprenticeship Readiness Program, creating pathways to economic stability and empowerment. Stay tuned for more highlights this week! #NAW2024
