Happy holidays, right? Maybe not so much. During the holiday season, the market typically focuses on companies’ year-over-year sales growth, profit margins, earnings reports, and inventory management as key indicators of performance and future outlook for the economy. But this year, attention has shifted towards a new challenge impacting businesses: politicization following the 2024 US Presidential Election and uncertainty around policy changes with a new administration. We are increasingly seeing content alleging political giving or company stances on policy issues that create the risk of significant backlash, including brand boycotts, organized protests, and coordinated negative social media influence campaigns. Don't be caught off guard. To effectively communicate with your stakeholders, you need insights into what issues they care about, how they’re engaging with those issues online, what messages do and do not resonate, and how they’re potentially being influenced by external factors. Learn more about the risks of politicization and weaponized information in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/giSmv9cZ #riskmanagement #CCO #disinformation #brandreputation #holidayshopping

  • In the aftermath of the tragic UnitedHealthcare incident, executive protection is on everyone's minds - and rightfully so. At Alethea, we do a lot of work around threats to the physical security of executives and their workforce and the consequences of conspiracy theories, disinformation, or weaponized information. We are increasingly seeing that online activity leads to real-world offline action, sometimes in the form of direct violence. We wanted to share a resource our team created a few years ago in response to the emergence of this trend because we don't anticipate the threat going away anytime soon. In an effort to raise awareness and offer support where it's needed, we are happy to have our team spend time digging into your risk profile. It can often be difficult to assess what content poses a true risk vs content that is just in poor taste - that's where we can help make sense of complicated and nuanced issues and provide peace of mind. • Alethea’s CEO, Lisa Kaplan, took the mic on Bloomberg News to discuss challenges retailers face during their most critical time of year – the holiday season – particularly in the wake of an election cycle, as they grapple with online misinformation and disinformation.    From politically driven boycotts to the manipulation of algorithms, Lisa shed light on some of the most pressing trends and obstacles, offering a timely and essential discussion for any #brand or #retailer navigating today’s online landscape.    Thank you to hosts Paul Sweeney and David Gura for having us.     #brandreputation #misinformation #disinformation #holiday #consumerbehavior

  • KFC, Pfizer, Panasonic, and Microsoft are just a few of the high-profile companies targeted by sophisticated foreign influence operations, detailed in our latest report, Stormkiller: A Russian IO Coverup. Russian-backed networks used hijacked accounts and bots to spread disinformation, manipulate public opinion, and damage brand reputations.     These findings serve as a wake-up call for the modern Chief Communications Officer. Key takeaways include:  - Political disinformation as a brand risk: As brands become increasingly politicized, they face rising reputational threats surrounding hot-button issues like tariffs or inflation  - Digital and physical security: Disinformation can have real-world consequences, from protests and boycotts.   - Small accounts, big impact: Low-engagement accounts, when amplified by bots, can severely undermine a brand’s credibility.    Learn more about these evolving threats for CCOs and communications professionals, and how Alethea is helping identify early warning signs of reputational risks in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/gJrD447j   #riskmanagement #disinformation #CCO #misinformation #brandreputation

Alethea’s CEO, Lisa Kaplan, recently led critical conversations on online risk, disinformation, and hybrid warfare, highlighting the pressing need for organizations to address and prevent these pervasive threats.   During these events, Lisa emphasized that disinformation poses significant corporate security and communications risks across all industries. The consequences of conspiracy theories and false narratives can erode public trust and credibility, fuel violence and threats against employees, and burn time, resources, and C-Suite energy.   To mitigate these risks, it’s imperative to extend your security perimeter by implementing robust threat detection solutions to distinguish real threats from false alarms, enhancing security for high-profile executives, improving facility security and implementing training for employees to handle physical security threats.   Thanks to Center for European Policy Analysis, Institute for Public Relations, Emergent Risk International and OSAC Europe for including us in the conversation to discuss these issues and the most important point: the need for data that brings clarity, greater certainty, and a predictive value to strategic risk management decisions.
