🇱🇰 GNI welcomes the Sri Lankan Government’s decision to amend the Online Safety Act 2023, and calls for a rigorous, transparent, and rights-based approach to its revision. To achieve a fit-for-purpose regulation, it is imperative to hold timely and thorough multistakeholder consultations on the law, prioritizing taking into account its outcomes. With a new Parliament in session, the Government has the opportunity to align the country's online safety regime with its national and international human rights commitments, as well as harmonize the OSA with other global regulatory best practices. 🔶 GNI has a breadth of resources that would be useful for the Government as it prepares to inquire into the OSA, and our multistakeholder expertise remains open to offering a unique and important perspective in drafting such critical legislation. GNI welcomes the release of the first risk assessment, risk mitigation, and independent audits reports published pursuant to Article 42(4) of the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA). This milestone marks an important step toward enhancing transparency and accountability for large digital services, objectives that align with GNI’s long-standing commitment to promoting responsible business practices. In the coming months, we will continue to engage with the European Commission, EU Digital Service Coordinators, authorities in other regions, and a wide range of stakeholders to enable further learning and improvement around tech company risk assessments and mitigations, and to ensure these regulatory processes lead to meaningful accountability and protection of fundamental rights. GNI has written an open letter to the Prime Minister of #Malaysia, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to express concern regarding recent regulatory initiatives by the Malaysian Government targeting social media providers and messaging services. GNI acknowledges the important role that governments can have in regulating the ICT sector to ensure due process, transparency, and accountability. However, a rights-respecting law requires carefully considered approaches to enforcement and narrowly tailored requirements for content-related decision-making.
