PACK EXPO 2024 was just incredible. With 70,000 people and 2,700 suppliers all under one roof, I learned so much. The path forward for sustainable packaging is going to be both multifaceted and complex, but it’s clear that the need for standardization is huge. I had no idea that terms like recycled, recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable can mean so many different things depending on country and even state policies and regulations. There’s so much work to be done! But the best part is seeing how many smart, passionate people are actively working on solutions.Including the 2 companies I have the pleasure to work for. A recent peer-reviewed study found that 17 out of 20 black recycled household plastic products contain flame retardants, potentially exposing people to high levels of cancer-causing and hormone-disrupting chemicals. The study found the highest levels in products including sushi trays. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that these chemicals are presistent and toxic to both humans and the environment. When heated, they cause chemical leaching into food.
