We’re excited to share that Cauldron Ferm has been awarded $1.76 million from the United States Department of Defense to plan a U.S.-based commercial-scale facility. As Heidi Shyu, Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, highlights in the announcement: "The next industrial revolution will be a biomanufacturing revolution.” We are honoured to be part of this pioneering DoD Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Program (DBIMP) to help transition U.S. bioindustrial manufacturing from the laboratory to a network of large-scale production facilities. The Cauldron U.S. facility will use hyper-fermentation to produce precision-fermented products ranging from food proteins to fuels and chemicals at a lower cost than traditional production methods. With this announcement of our first U.S. facility – expanding Cauldron’s footprint from our current demo operations and first planned industrial site in Australia – there’s incredible momentum behind our mission to solve the gap in commercially viable biomanufacturing capacity. Read more about the announcement here: https://bit.ly/4fZuv3Q We’re proud to be part of this global movement fueling a thriving global bioeconomy 🌐 Congratulations to the other awardees! The United States Department of Defense recently annnounced nine awards as part of its Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing program (DBIMP) to bio-manufacturing companies, and among those were three SOSV portfolio companies, Cauldron Ferm, Perfect Day and The EVERY Company. The awards ranged from $1.24 to $2.0 million and will be used "to produce business and technical plans that detail construction of domestic bioindustrial manufacturing production facilities under the Defense Industrial Base Consortium (DIBC) Other Transaction Agreement (OTA), a contract vehicle awarded and overseen by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy. These proposals will be eligible to receive follow-on "build" awards providing access to up to $100 million to construct U.S.-based bio-industrial manufacturing facilities." https://lnkd.in/e9MvDP7b

Over the course of last month's Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit, our co-founder and CEO Michele Stansfield joined 3️⃣ panel discussions. Each conversation covered different high-impact topics essential to overcoming the so-called "Valley of Death" for today's food tech industry. 1️⃣ insightful discussion on collaborative models to scale microbial food production moderated by Mirte Gosker of The Good Food Institute 🤝 2️⃣ Build your Biofuture Australia panel, addressing how Australia's robust biomanufacturing slipstream is accelerating global food security 🇦🇺 3️⃣ breakout session organized by Yonatan Golan of Brevel sharing insights on building FOAK facilities to bridge the gap between lab-scale innovations and mass production 🏭 It was a jam-packed few days of inspiring conversations! A big thank you to our partners and collaborators across the conference for inviting us to share Cauldron Ferm's perspective and lessons learned on our journey to provide a commercially-viable scale up solution for precision fermentation companies. Fascinating - and yes, encouraging - to see alt-proteins and other novel food technologies recognized for their security potential by no less than the United States Department of Defense. Even as others in the corridors of power have sought to politicize and sensationalize them... 🇺🇸 Since July this year, the DoD has dished out over $60M in grants to 34 innovators under its Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Program (DBIMP). This first phase of the DBIMP aims to support "business and technical planning efforts across focus areas for defence materials: fabrication, firepower, fitness, food, and fuel". The next phase will see the DoD assist with "building bioproduction infrastructure that increases the domestic supply of critical materials". DBIMP first-phase grantees include several foodtech innovators / incumbents who will use the funds to develop their initial infrastructure plans... ⚗️ Cauldron Ferm awarded $1.76M to plan a commercial-scale facility that'll use precision fermentation to produce food proteins, fuels, and chemicals 🛢️ Checkerspot - $3.19M for lubricants free of PFAS, and food-grade triglyceride oils 🦠 DSM - $2.07M to "expand domestic production of omega-3 fatty acids for food supplies, which increasingly has been sourced from foreign producers" 💪 The EVERY Company - $2M for performance protein products for human nutrition. "These proteins have unique features such as high solubility and increased protein density that can be easily incorporated into a range of form factors – high-concentration protein gels, hot and cold beverages, and meal rations." 🍄 Nature's Fynd - $1.38M for "fungi-based proteins that can be incorporated into military ready-to-eat meals" 🏭 Liberation Labs - $1.4M to address "the growing need for precision-fermented bioproducts within the defense application areas of food, operational fitness, and fabrication". 🐮 Perfect Day - $1.24M to develop plans for "biobased whey [which] can be used to supplement military ready-to-eat meals and provide a safe source of protein for service members with dairy allergies". 🥩 The Better Meat Co. - $1.48M for mycoprotein ingredients that are "shelf-stable, have high protein and fiber contents, and can be dehydrated". In short: the US military sees promise in advanced fermentation technologies to provide nutrition for its personnel, as well as fuels and materials for its operations. These novel proteins could also be impactful for civilian populations in conflict or disaster zones where the US military may be deployed. And the bigger picture: these foodtech solutions can support the US's food security more generally in a context of climate change and rising geopolitical tension. #cleantech #climatetech #foodtech #agrifoodtech #agrifood #alternativeproteins #altprotein #foodsecurity #nationalsecurity Image credit: Air Force Staff Sgt.
