Tutor Perini Building Corp. has announced that its subsidiary, Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. has been awarded a contract valued at approximately $1.1 billion by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection for the Kensico-Eastview Connection Tunnel Project. The scope of work entails the construction of a new deep rock tunnel between the Kensico Reservoir and the Catskill/Delaware Ultraviolet (CDUV) Light Disinfection Facility, both in Westchester County, New York. Work is expected to begin in the coming months with substantial completion expected in 2030. The contract value was added to Tutor Perini’s backlog in Q3 2024. The I-94 Modernization Project means rebuilding an approximately 7-mile section of freeway through Detroit, but before more of the project gets underway, the Michigan Department of Transportation plans to build an underground drainage tunnel. MDOT is planning to begin construction on a drainage tunnel in 2026 before moving to road and bridge work in the roughly 2-mile stretch starting in 2028 or 2029. MDOT has filed a number of lawsuits in Wayne County Circuit Court in recent weeks seeking temporary construction easements to access nearby properties for grading. The city of Calgary administration outlined a number of major water projects as part of its proposed budget adjustments for 2025. The city is eyeing the construction of $1.5 billion in projects. To make it happen, the city wants to borrow more than $1 billion. The debt would be repaid through monthly payments on resident utility bills and the collection of off-site levies. Tennessee needs more than $3 billion by 2027 to repair, replace and expand wastewater treatment systems as infrastructure crumbles and population increases. The first-of-its-kind snapshot of Tennessee’s aging waste systems by the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Affairs lays out looming and costly challenges ahead. Many of the state’s sewage treatment plants are marked by a “failure to maintain or upgrade systems,” the report noted. Local governments have little financial leeway to upgrade and expand public systems. And nearly half of all decentralized waste systems — typically operated by for-profit companies to serve a single entity, such as a subdivision — fail to comply with minimum state environmental standards. UK-headquartered construction firm Balfour Beatty US has been awarded a $746 million contract by the Texas Department of Transportation, to rebuild a 4km stretch of Interstate 35 in Austin, Texas. The scope of work includes expanding the route to eight traffic lanes, constructing a new intersection, and implementing a number of access road improvements to streamline traffic flow and enhance connectivity. As part of the infrastructure upgrade, a new bridge across Lady Bird Lake will replace the current structure, which was built in 1956. The bridge construction will involve complex marine engineering and will be carried out from a barge due to its location over water. The federal government has granted approval of a new federal prison in Letcher County, Kentucky. The House Appropriations Committee has earmarked $500 million for construction of the facility. The Federal Bureau of Prisons said it will acquire approximately 500 acres of land in Roxana, Kentucky, to build and operate the federal correctional institution and camp, designed to hold 1,408 adults.
