During the first set of tariffs in 2018, the Fed staff ran an analysis of the possible impact of a 15% universal tariff in their Teal book at the end of that year. They considered two scenarios, one in which the Fed looked through the inflation spike and another in which they responded with higher rates. Their forecasts concluded that core PCE would be boosted by just over a percentage point in the first year of the forecast but would quickly fade in the following year. They also argued that if the Fed responded, it would tip the economy into recession. 2025 could, of course, be different but the analysis is nevertheless an interesting place to start. #STTInsights

It was a great pleasure to join Ana Blanquart and FII Institute TV during my recent participation at #FII 8 in Riyadh. Consistent with the theme of FII 8, we talked about the important trends in innovation, technology and AI that are shaping the future of financial services in a dynamic world post Covid. We also had the opportunity to discuss the role of technology and monetary accommodation in facilitating the resilience of capital markets during Covid and beyond. This led to the discussion on hype vs reality of AI and the stock market perception of the same. Importantly, we talked about the Middle East and why it is such a vibrant and important region for global finance in general and State Street’s growth in particular. As we look to the new year and what lies ahead for all of us – both challenges and opportunities – I was excited to have a robust discussion with Ana on the five megatrends impacting investment services namely, De-globalization, Decarbonization, Debt, Digitization and Demographics. These megatrends abbreviated “5 Ds” will continue to shape global economic growth, markets and all of finance in the years ahead. Thank you, Ana, and the FII TV team for a great discussion. I look forward to my next visit and further conversations on these topics. https://lnkd.in/dsFKPPKG
