💪 #MachineLearning has become a powerful tool for solving complex scientific problems. In #nanophotonics research, it can be applied to predict optical properties and design structures according to a given set of desired material behaviors. 🚫 Problem: this often requires vast amounts of data and time-consuming model training, particularly as designs become more complex. A technique called "transfer learning" helps with this challenge, but it still struggles with complex designs and often requires substantial data. ✅ Researchers from the Cockrell School of Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin recently introduced an innovative approach: "nested transfer learning"! They start with simpler structures requiring less data and gradually transfer knowledge to more complex designs. By building on previous models, they can tackle highly complex designs using significantly less data.
