🏆 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗚𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 We are delighted to announce that we have won another award for our innovative #sustainability efforts and pioneering solutions: 🥳 We won the New Gases Innovation Award. Presented by the German Gas and Hydrogen Industry Associations under the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research patronage, the prize recognizes our ground-breaking "100% Hydrogen in Glass Production" project in the "Application Technology" category. 🏭 As the first company in the glass industry to successfully produce special optical glass using 100% hydrogen on an industrial scale, we have demonstrated that switching from fossil fuels to hydrogen in glass production without compromising quality is possible. Our project leaders, Lenka Deneke and Matthias Kaffenberger, presented this achievement at the award ceremony in Berlin. In addition to this prestigious award, we also won second place in the pre-selected audience award. Through years of research and development, we have built up significant expertise in hydrogen 💧 technology. While a mature infrastructure and competitive hydrogen prices are still needed, we are working further to convert our tanks. In the meantime, our next big step will be an electric heating tank in 2026. Our hydrogen trials have provided us with essential technical concepts for the future, allowing us to adapt as the situation evolves. This achievement marks another important milestone on our journey towards climate-neutral production by 2030. 🌱 Congratulations to the winners Schaeffler and the double winner RWE Gas Storage West, who also won the audience award. One step closer to LISA! 📷 NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration has shared some exciting new photos of a fullscale prototype for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna mission, led by European Space Agency - ESA. The new images show the LISA prototype Engineering Development Unit Telescope being inspected in the clean room at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. The prototype is made of our ZERODUR® glass-ceramic, which features a near-zero coefficient of thermal expansion, enabling the telescopes to detect gravitational waves by taking precise laser measurements. 🚀 Expected to launch in the mid-2030s, LISA will be the first space-based observatory for detecting gravitational waves. These waves are ripples in spacetime, created by powerful cosmic events like merging black holes and supernovae. LISA will consist of 3 satellites flying in a triangular formation, separated by 2.5 million kilometers, using laser beams to detect minuscule distance changes on the picometer scale (one trillionth of a meter!) as gravitational waves pass through. This groundbreaking mission will expand our understanding of the universe and the nature of gravity. 💙 We’re excited to see get a look at the prototype and see this mission taking shape! Hosted by Fraunhofer IOF in Jena,Germany, our glass expert Yakup Gönüllü recently joined fellow researchers from the #PrifUSIO research project to discuss the latest advancements in #fusion technology. Funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the PriFUSIO research project brings 10 of the leading organizations in laser fusion together to pursue one goal: harnessing nearly-limitless clean energy by recreating the sun’s fusion process. Our high-tech #laser glass, which amplifies laser light’s energy and performance, plays a key role in making this bold vision a reality. Just last year, it was essential to achieving the first successful fusion ignition at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) in California. And with over €1.3 million in funding, we’re developing the next wave of glass innovations for fusion energy – a promising solution for a more #sustainable future. We’re excited to continue working with the field’s top innovators and look forward to hosting next year’s PriFUSIO meeting at our headquarters in Mainz! 🤝☀

Join us in celebrating International Day of Radiology (#IDoR2024) – a day dedicated to raising awareness about the vital role radiology plays in ensuring safe patient care. From optical glass and radiation shielding glass to radiopaque composite additives in glass powder, #glass is an essential material that enhances X-ray technology and patient safety. Take our high-performance glass 8245, for example. It is crucial for the precision and reliability of X-ray tubes. This glass offers unparalleled stability in X-ray tubes due to its permanent seal with metal alloys. The secret lies in the matching coefficient of thermal expansion between glass and metal, allowing them to endure extreme temperatures up to 400°C without fracturing. While optical properties are irrelevant in this application – X-rays pass through a titanium window – our glass ensures durability over a three-year lifespan. This results in accurate diagnoses, quicker treatment decisions, and improved healthcare outcomes.
