Want to see how spatial insights led to an increase in 3-pointers in the NBA? 🏀 Check out Kirk Goldsberry’s #SDSC24 talk and more: https://lnkd.in/dmg3GDne
Did you know #geospatialdata is the secret behind the NBA’s three-point revolution? 🏀 In his talk at the Spatial Data Science Conference this year, Kirk Goldsberry highlighted the critical role of high-quality data in extracting meaningful insights and stressed the importance of an empathetic approach to data representation. His research has transformed how we analyze basketball, leading to real behavioral changes in the sport: the importance of the 3 point shot. The shot data he presented demonstrates just how valuable data can be in shaping strategies and decision-making—whether on the court or in the business world. Imagine if we applied this level of geospatial data analysis to marketing and retail. The potential to redefine how we make decisions is enormous. Here’s why this matters: 🗺 Visuals over reports: If you’re drowning in spreadsheets, it’s time to trade them in for visuals. Clear, concise data representation helps everyone grasp what’s really going on. 💡 Layered insights: The more data layers you add (and the higher the quality), the more context you gain. Want to know if foot traffic is actually turning into sales? That’s where spatial analytics shines. ❤️ Empathetic encoding: Data visualizations should be designed with people in mind, making complex information easier to understand. As Kirk emphasized, data serves as a gateway to clearer communication and a deeper understanding of people and patterns—even in basketball. Just another example showing that sports are cool, but data might be cooler. For the curious ones who want to watch this talk, I highly recommend it, you can find the links in the comments! 👇 And for anyone who has cool examples of how data (preferably but not limited to geospatial data) has revolutionized a sector, let me know in the comments! 👇 #data #dataisbeautiful #nba #basketball #decisionmaking

Time to reflect on the last Spatial Data Science Conference in New York 🇺🇸 Congrats to Jérôme Urbain from GeoPostcodes and Daniel Smith from Wherobots for explaining how to turn any raster data into ready-to-use polygon data quickly, using the example of census data. I had a lot of insightful discussions with Yan T. Michael Johns David Lapp Rebecca Blandin Puru Botla Emily Goodman Brian Duggan Ishraq Rayeed Ahmed Eric Anderson. Thanks CARTO for organizing, and see you next year! #SDSC24 #SpatialData #LocationData #DataScience #NewYork #GIS

The Spatial Data Science Conference was a great event last week! Thanks to CARTO for all the Apache Sedona and #Wherobots shout outs, as well as all of the amazing #dataengineering chats with the participants. We had a packed house all around in the #workshop on Wednesday, the #ApacheSedona happy hour that evening, as well as many great conversations throughout the event on Thursday! We also loved learning from all of the other presenters about their fascinating topics - everything from predicting neighborhood decline / improvement through aggregating real estate listing descriptions, to determining crop yield from #satellite imagery. So cool! Can’t wait to do it again next year!

It was great having you and your team!🥕 🛒 Thanks for sharing at #SDSC24 🗽
Had a great time presenting at the CARTO 2024 Spatial Data Science Conference (#SDSC24) in New York last week! Learned a ton from the other speakers and got to share how Instacart uses spatial data and DS/ML methods to improve the platform. Hope to do it again next year!

🔥 Breaking the GIS Data Silo at SDSC 2024! 🚀 I had the pleasure of delivering the keynote at the Spatial Data Science Conference at Columbia University, and it was an incredible experience connecting with so many of you passionate about maps and spatial analytics. 🌍 Here's a glimpse of what I shared: 🌪 From Hurricanes to Insurance – Spatial data is key to managing crises like the recent Florida hurricanes. Every industry—from insurance to utilities and public health—needs to respond and adapt using modernized spatial infrastructures. 🛰 Raster Data Revolution – Rasters are critical for spatial analysis, yet difficult for many to access. At CARTO, we're tackling this with: Rasquet – A new format that allows rasters to be accessed via SQL in data warehouses, breaking down barriers for non-experts. Raster Engine – For large planetary datasets, we’ve made it easy to pull Earth Engine data directly into your SQL workflows! 🛠 CARTO Workflows Extensions – Extending CARTO’s capabilities, allowing users to add custom logic through extensions. From Earth Engine to telco analytics, we’re inviting partners to collaborate on this rich ecosystem. 💥 BigQuery’s Geoparquet Support – Exciting news! BigQuery is now the first cloud data warehouse with Geoparquet support—streamlining GEO data interoperability across platforms like DuckDB, Geopandas, and Spark. 💡 Databricks Integration – We’ve officially launched full support for Databricks! With spatial SQL, photon acceleration, and raster capabilities, we’re enabling spatial analytics on one of the world’s largest analytics platforms. 🤖 AI Agents for Maps – Finally, we unveiled CARTO AI Agents—using natural language to simplify spatial analysis, making maps more accessible to everyone. A big shoutout to Helen McKenzie for the amazing live demo on stage! 🌐 Kudos to the entire CARTO team on getting so much ready for the conference! It is amazing the amount of release new capabilities just unlocked. I’m looking forward to continuing the conversation with the SDSC community. The slides from my keynote are attached—let's keep pushing the boundaries of spatial analytics together! 💬 #SpatialData #Geospatial #AI #CloudNative #Databricks #GIS #SDSC2024
