Since 2015, the Khmeimim Air Force Base has been the focal point of Russia's military involvement in the Syrian civil war. Following the recent collapse of Bashar Al-Assad's regime over the weekend, Russia is rapidly evacuating its troops and sensitive equipment from the base. SpaceKnow has been monitoring Russian activities at Khmeimim Air Base, including the withdrawal process. On Friday, SpaceKnow’s automated aircraft detection algorithm identified only one heavy-lift aircraft at the base, the Il-76 Candid. However, on Saturday, the same algorithm detected three heavy-lift aircraft: two Il-76 Candids and one An-124 Condor. The algorithm performed effectively even in the challenging conditions of partly cloudy visibility.

SpaceKnow Inc. and Spire successfully detected the Chinese ship Yi Peng 3, suspected of being involved in clandestine activities related to sabotaging two underwater cables in the Baltic Sea. These cables were damaged on November 17 and 18, 2024. The C-Lion1 cable connects Finland to Germany, while the second cable links Lithuania to Sweden. The Yi Peng 3, a Chinese bulk carrier, traveled from Ust-Luga, Russia, to Port Said, Egypt, followed by a Danish Navy ship. Utilizing data fusion, space-based technology, AI, automation, and scalability, we can address challenges that would be extremely difficult for human analysts. The vast area and the sheer number of satellite images can be overwhelming, making timely human analysis nearly impossible. SpaceKnow’s algorithms scanned over 12,000 square kilometers of the Baltic Sea. Within a few minutes, our system identified available historical imagery, located vessels in the area, and used AIS data from Spire to pinpoint the ship we were searching for. This efficient process can be repeated anywhere on the planet at any time. Data from Spire: https://lnkd.in/gEcHUbfa #satellitedata #aisdata #maritimeanalysis

🚀 SpaceKnow Inc., in cooperation with Satellogic, has been monitoring Satellogic’s high-resolution optical imagery of a Russian AEW&C Beriev A-50 aircraft (NATO reporting name: Mainstay). This was located at Russia’s home base in Ivanovo using SpaceKnow's proprietary automated aircraft detection and classification algorithm. ✈ According to the results, we identified 10 A-50 Mainstay AEW&C aircraft. However, only one looks airworthy. Nine Mainstays appear to be in poor shape and do not appear airworthy. Interestingly, eight old Mainstays have been constantly moved around the parking lots throughout the summer. It could suggest that Russia is trying to use the old Mainstays for spare parts for the few A-50s that are still operational. AEW&C aircraft are crucial for Russia as they help to identify targets over long distances. Constantly disabling these assets, as Ukraine is doing, is a huge blow to Russia’s military, capabilities, reputation, and pride.
