Core values need to come from positive traits within your business that already exist - i.e. they shouldn't be ‘aspirational’.  Through our work helping clients with their core values over the last 20 years, and first-hand experience with own company values, aspirational core values don’t get traction.  Core values are ones that your team already believe in - we may stray from them, but they help bring us back to what is important.  And they’re the guiding light when hiring (and firing). As per this article, being ‘concrete’ with language is also very important - values like “change, innovate, connect” are just too generic.  As SongDivision USA’s GM Angus Clark likes to remind teams when they’re writing songs based on their core values, you need to put 'furniture in the lyrics'.  i.e. get specific, paint a clear picture that people can easily visualize and use to guide their daily behaviors. The Economist usually gives folks a few free articles each month, but if you get blocked, here's the relevant paragraph: "Take, for example, the importance of vivid imagery as a way of bringing an organisation’s purpose to life. Lots of firms use a succession of tediously abstract words to convey their goal: “change”, “innovate”, “connect” and so on. The result is less a mission than a mood board. Mr Galinsky cites an experiment by Andrew Carton of the University of Pennsylvania and his co-authors that showed the effect of more concrete language. In it, teams were asked to design toys and given a vision statement to guide their behaviour. Teams who were handed a statement with more visual language—to create toys that “…make wide-eyed kids laugh and proud parents smile”—produced more engaging toys than teams who were given something more generic."
