  • This week, long-time #SEPTA veteran Scott Sauer took on a new role as the Authority’s Interim General Manager. Sauer had most recently been the Chief Operating Officer for SEPTA. SEPTA Board Chair Ken Lawrence announced Sauer would serve as Interim General Manager while the Board considers a permanent successor to former General Manager Leslie S. Richards who stepped down at the end of November. Sauer started his career with SEPTA in 1990 as a Surface Trolley Operator. A second-generation transit professional he follows in the footsteps of his late father, Robert, who served the Philadelphia Transportation Company and SEPTA for 30 years. “I am honored to be entrusted with the stewardship of a transit system that is absolutely essential to the region’s success,” said Sauer. “My priority will be to commit this organization to a back-to-basics philosophy emphasizing the fundamentals that keep Greater Philadelphia moving each day: safety, customer service, and reliability.” Over the years, Sauer progressed through roles as a Subway/Elevated Train Operator, Transportation Manager, and Safety Officer. In 2013, he was appointed Assistant General Manager of System Safety where he developed and implemented critical safety initiatives. In 2017, Sauer was promoted to Assistant General Manager of Operations overseeing all operational aspects of SEPTA including Transportation, Control Center, Vehicle Maintenance, and Station Cleaning. In 2022, Sauer was named Chief Operating Officer expanding his oversight to include the Engineering, Maintenance, and Construction Division; Transit Police; and Capital Programs. His leadership has guided the organization through significant challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic, cybersecurity incidents, civil unrest, and budgetary constraints. Sauer also manages a $2.5 billion annual budget focusing on transformative projects such as rail fleet replacements, station upgrades to achieve full accessibility by 2035, and infrastructure improvements to enhance SEPTA’s reliability and state of good repair. Sauer is a nationally recognized transit safety and operations expert serving on multiple industry boards and committees including two terms with the Federal Transit Administration’s Transit Advisory Committee for Safety (TRACS) where he served as Chairman; the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Committee on Transit Safety and Security; the Northeast Corridor Safety and Security Committee; and the Board of Directors for Operation Lifesaver, Inc., a national rail safety organization. Since 2011, Sauer has also been a faculty member in the USDOT TSI Associate Staff Program teaching Transit Rail Incident Investigation and mentoring future transit professionals. He holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Protection and Safety Management from Saint Joseph's University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. #ISEPTAPHILLY #waytogo

  • SEPTA is proud of its long and productive partnership with Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) – a relationship that began when the Airport Line opened in 1985. We are grateful to the City of Philadelphia and the Department of Aviation for their investment in this project and in #SEPTA service. The rehabbed platforms and passenger waiting areas – and new lighting – have created a welcoming transit gateway for the millions of visitors who fly to Philadelphia each year and use SEPTA to continue on to destinations throughout our region. These were much-needed improvements for SEPTA and our customers - particularly airport employees - who rely on the Airport Line to commute every day to perform their important work. #ISEPTAPHILLY #waytogo

The completion of the two-year renovation project to Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA)'s Airport Line platforms at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) was celebrated with a ribbon cutting on November 15. Among those participating in the event were PHL CEO Atif Saeed, A.A.E., IAP , and CDO Api Appulingam, P.E., A.A.E., SEPTA GM and CEO Leslie S. Richards and State Representative Regina Young. 🌱 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞! Last week, we unveiled an incredible project at Jefferson Station in collaboration with Global Philadelphia Association that highlights SEPTA's ongoing commitment to sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I want to extend my gratitude to our partners from the City—Philadelphia Councilmember Nicolas O'Rourke and Director of Sustainability Elizabeth H. Lankenau, AICP —for their continued support of our mission to drive sustainability forward. At SEPTA, we’re fully committed to environmentally responsible operations. Our goal is simple: to provide safe, reliable, sustainable, and accessible mobility for everyone in Southeastern Pennsylvania. This exhibit reflects our efforts to align with the UN’s SDGs and showcases how art can be a powerful catalyst for change. We’re taking action every day: - Released our third-generation 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 correlating SEPTA’s goals with the UN’s SDGs. - Retired our last fully diesel-powered bus during 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤, reinforcing our commitment to a greener future. - Transitioned our fleet of nearly 1,400 buses and trackless trolleys to 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐲𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜, boosting energy efficiency and lowering maintenance costs. - Invested in renewable energy through the 𝐄𝐥𝐤 𝐇𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭, offsetting our operations with clean energy and saving SEPTA over $500,000 to date. We hope this exhibit gives our riders deeper insight into the work we're doing and inspires awareness of the global importance of sustainability. Thank you to everyone involved in bringing this project to life! Together, we’re moving forward for a greener, more sustainable future. • On Tuesday, October 1, #SEPTA General Manager/CEO Leslie S. Richards testified with Katharine Eagan Kelleman of Pittsburgh Regional Transit, Richard Farr of rabbittransit, and Tim Geibel of Crawford Area Transportation Authority at a Senate Transportation Committee hearing asking final legislative approval in October of the Governor's proposal to fund #publictransportation. The panel highlighted the critical role public transportation plays for millions of Pennsylvanians in all 67 counties – connecting employees and customers to businesses, students to school, and seniors to essential services. And that without additional funding, there will be dire consequences for our riders, the communities we serve, and the Commonwealth as a whole. Severe service reductions and major fare increases will trigger a spiral of less service and higher costs. That will critically compromise individual mobility and economic productivity across the state. After the hearing, Leslie joined a broad based group of supporters including TWU 234 and hundreds of stakeholders and legislators at a Rally in Harrisburg to urge action on new transportation funding. The General Assembly is in session again this week and we are continuing our full-court press to secure passage of long-term dedicated funding for transit. We are grateful for public transportation’s many supporters in the legislature and partners and advocates in transportation who are supporting this critical effort on behalf of statewide transit and those who rely on it every day. #ISEPTAPHILLY #waytogo #funding
