Advancing Robots’ Autonomy and Physical Performance for Interaction and Rehabilitation
About us
Funded by the European Union Horizon Europe programme, grant agreement ID: 101120727 The next-generation personal robots will possess cognitive and motor intelligence that can enhance human interaction. However, the current AI and robotics paradigms require additional resources to achieve performance and reasoning abilities similar to those of humans. The EU-funded PRIMI project integrates research from neurophysiology, psychology and machine intelligence to formulate models for higher-order cognitive capabilities. The aim is to usher in a new era of autonomous technologies that exhibit enhanced precision, speed and safety in real-time learning and adaptation processes. PRIMI envisions a transformative impact on AI and robotics, accomplished by the development of socially interactive autonomous robots. To validate this vision, prototypes of neuromorphic humanoid robots will undergo clinical pilot studies focusing on stroke rehabilitation.

In cooperation with Technische Universität Dresden, we are very pleased to welcome our consortum partners of the PRIMI Project to an exciting three-day event here in Dresden this week. 💡 The PRIMI project aims to revolutionize personal robotic systems by integrating neuromorphic engineering, machine intelligence, neurophysiology and psychology to develop robots capable of advanced cognition, mental imagery and theory of mind. By combining energy-efficient event-driven computing with developmental models for human-like thinking, PRIMI aims to create autonomous, socially interactive robots. 0️⃣ Before the official program begins, SpiNNcloud will offer a preparatory workshop on Wednesday, November 27, introducing the SpiNNaker2 platform, its architecture, applications and software stack, as well as tutorials on hybrid model integration. 1️⃣ On the first PRIMI workshop day, Thursday November 28, there will be updates on the status of ongoing PRIMI work packages on cognitive architectures, neuromorphic engineering and interdisciplinary data acquisition. 2️⃣ On Friday 29 November, the second PRIMI workshop day will then focus on management and strategic reviews, with an emphasis on dissemination and knowledge transfer. And of course we will also visit a Dresden Christmas market together. 🎄 🍷 A big thank you to our consortium partners from FONDAZIONE ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI TECNOLOGIA, Università degli Studi di Ferrara, Bielefeld University, Sheffield Hallam University, The University of Manchester and PAL Robotics - it is our pleasure to welcome you here in Dresden and we are looking forward to some very special and exciting days with you! If you want to know more about PRIMI, then please find the link to the project website in the first comment ⬇️

⭐ Meet the PRIMI team ⭐ "Imagine when you saw a can opener for the first time. You had no idea how it works until you saw someone use it, and then, suddenly it seemed like you could do the same! This priceless ability is often taken for guaranteed in us humans. To replicate this sophisticated process in humanoid robots using bio-mimetic cognitive architectures and neuromorphic hardware is at the core of our team’s scientific endeavours here at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU). Eventually, our work will culminate in clinical demonstrations showcasing the robot's ability to assist in the physical rehabilitation of stroke patients using this newly acquired set of skills." #PRIMIProject #HumanoidRobots #AI #MachineLeaning #HorizonEurope #ResearchProject #Collaboration Sheffield Hallam University

⭐ Meet the PRIMI team ⭐ We caught up with Dresden-based PRIMI partner SpiNNcloud Systems GmbH to find out more about their role in the project. Here's what they had to say: "Picture a robot that can process its sensor data and use models efficiently to make real-time decisions without being weighed down by large batteries. At SpiNNcloud, we enhance humanoid robots using neuromorphic computing. This technology boosts low-power device performance through its event-based architecture, crucial for robots needing top processing power without large batteries. Our role in the #PRIMIproject includes software support, enabling spiking and conventional neural network execution. SpiNNaker2 excels at this by assigning tasks independently to each of its cores and allowing seamless communication. This ensures real-time neural network simulations, vital for robotics. Thank you for meeting our team, and we look forward to sharing more about our journey and achievements in the PRIMI project."
