  • "The bedrock principle of influencing behavior is this: People tend to take the path of least resistance. Ease is the single best predictor of behavior. Better than motivation, intentions, price, quality, or satisfaction. There's a little-known marketing metric that comes down to a simple question: How easy was it?" That's from Yale professor Zoe Chance in her book 𝘐𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 That marketing metric? Check this out: "How customers answer that one question explains one-third of their willingness to buy again, to increase their business with the company, or to rave about it to other people. While one-third may not sound like much, it's actually huge; the Customer Effort Score is 12% more predictive of customer loyalty than customer satisfaction is. Ease makes people happy and effort can really piss people off." What's an example of how someone (colleague, product, service provider) made a recent interaction easy? Or an example of the opposite? How about this as an intention for you and your team in the year ahead? Be easy to work with. Check out my interview with Zoe Chance in episode 347. It's one of my favorites! #projectmanagement #hapmo #management #leadership #pmo #influence

  • "Wisdom is the reward you get for a lifetime of listening when you'd have preferred to talk." Doug Larson I'd say more. But I'd rather listen. :) What's an example of how you learned something by being quiet instead of speaking? Celeste Headlee joined me to discuss her book We Need to Talk. I know--that's an ironic title for a post about listening. But Celeste shares some helpful insights on listening. • "Success does not lie in sticking to things. It lies in picking the right thing to stick to and quitting the rest. When the world tells you to quit, it is, of course, possible you might see something the world doesn't see, causing you to rightly persist even when others would abandon the cause. But when the world is screaming at the top of their lungs to quit and you refuse to listen, grit can become folly. Too often, we refuse to listen." Annie Duke People were begging Muhammad Ali to quit boxing. He wouldn't. You may have opinions on whether Tom Brady should have stayed in retirement. I know a guy who all his friends were saying "You need to break off this relationship. Don't marry her." They married anyway--and it didn't last long. Jobs. Career choices. Selected majors. Organizations you support with your time and money. A book you pick up. This post! Here's my question for you: How do you try to discern the difference between when "it's time to persist" and "it's time to quit"? Leave a comment below. As we soon start a new year, reflect on what you need to "quit". To help, check out my interview with Annie Duke in episode 372 about her book Quit. She'll inspire you to start the new year with a different perspective. #projectmanagement #management #leadership #pmo #quitting #decisionmaking #projects #pdus #freepdus

  • How do projects get to be a year behind schedule? How do careers stagnate? How do relationships break down? How are we already in the 4th quarter of 2024? One day at a time. Projects don't drift to being on time, on budget, and delivering intended benefits. Relationships don't tend to drift toward increasing closeness. Whether with our projects, careers, or relationships, where have things been drifting? Let's take Fred Brooks' idea to heart as we head into the weekend. Have a great one! #projectmanagement #leadership #management #pmo #weekend

  • "On average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar." David Ogilvy Ever seen this? "Yeah, I was reading about __________." But the truth is they didn't read the article. Or research paper. Or book. They read a headline. It might not seem like you're in the headline-writing business, but you are--many times a day! You choose a Subject line for your emails. And how you write that subject might make the difference between whether someone opens the message or puts it on the back burner. Whether they realize action is needed now or if it's just FYI. What other examples of how writing a good "headline" matters? And what is it that makes for a compelling "headline"? Leave your thoughts below. Daniel Pink joined me to talk about his book To Sell Is Human. The book is filled with insights that salespeople know to get people to take action--and how those ideas can be applied by the rest of us. Queue up episode 88 for a discussion to help grow your ability to influence (and get your email message opened!). #projectmanagement #management #leadership #pmo #influence #sellingskills #projects

Eric Barker What do you like about Eric Barker's definition of political skills? What would you add or change? Leave a comment below. One of my favorite interviews on organizational politics is with Dan Rust about his book 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘳. • Sister Elizabeth Kenny was a self-trained nurse who made major contributions to the treatment of polio and provided care during World War I. She made this observation about anger: "He who angers you, conquers you." It reminds me of the observation by Dr. Mark Goulston: "An attack is an opportunity... for poise! Stripping you of your poise is their best weapon." Something is going to happen this week that will have the opportunity to set you off. Strip you of your poise. Remember the wise words of Sister Elizabeth Kenny. What are some examples you've seen of where the observations from Kenny and Goulston were shown to be true? (My 15-year-old daughter says Star Wars is full of examples of this!) How do you try to keep your poise when you feel angry or attacked? Leave a comment below. Have a great week! Dr. Mark Goulston joined me to discuss his book Talking To Crazy. • There's evidence to suggest that the legendary Fred Astaire was given this feedback after an early screen test: "Can’t act. Slightly bald. Can dance a little." Little did that reviewer know that Astaire would end up starring in 10 Broadway and West End musicals, make 31 musical films, and be known as one of the most famous Hollywood dancers over the years. The truth is the hiring process is notoriously difficult--and not just for performers. I'm seeing an increase in the number of companies who are bringing people on as contractors for a period of time before hiring them. It's one way to allow both parties to see if it's a good fit. What are some other lessons you've learned about how to more accurately assess whether a potential hire is a good fit for your team and organization? Lou Adler is a legendary expert on the hiring process. He joined me to talk about his classic book Hire With Your Head. Queue up episode 350 for insights to keep you from being like the person who missed hiring Fred Astaire! #projectmanagement #hapmo #management #leadership #pmo #hiring #career

  • “You literally cannot overplay the hand of gratitude; the grateful mind reaps massive benefits in every domain of life that has been examined so far. Gratitude is the ultimate performance-enhancing substance.” Robert Emmons As we celebrate Thanksgiving in the U.S. this week, it's a good opportunity to be reminded about the power of gratitude. Here's an idea to reflect on, regardless of whether or not you are celebrating a holiday this week: “Living gratefully begins with affirming the good and recognizing its sources. It is the understanding that life owes me nothing and all the good I have is a gift, accompanied by an awareness that nothing can be taken for granted.” On behalf of me and my team that work to foster these discussions each week, thank you for the value you add by sharing your perspectives! You are appreciated! #projectmanagement #hapmo #management #leadership #pmo #gratitude #thanksgiving

  • "Every thought a person dwells upon, whether he expresses it or not, either damages or improves his life." Lucy Mallory I've never read Winifred Gallagher's book 𝘙𝘢𝘱𝘵. But I've long been intrigued by a passage from it that aligns with Lucy Mallory's observation: “If you could look backward at your years thus far, you’d see that your life has been fashioned from what you’ve paid attention to and what you haven’t. You’d observe that of the myriad sights and sounds, thoughts and feelings that you could have focused on, you selected a relative few, which became what you’ve confidently called ‘reality.’ You’d also be struck by the fact that if you had paid attention to other things, your reality and your life would be very different. In short, live a focused life, because it’s the best kind there is.” Maybe it's been a great week! Or a brutal one! Here's an encouragement to take some time to purposefully dwell on some of the good that happened. To take a moment and express gratitude for it. Have a great weekend! #projectmanagement #hapmo #management #leadership #pmo #gratitude #weekend #focus
