Reading all these comments- what if there was something completely open source, with no software licensing, that didn't require an immense team of talent, and leveraged hyperscaler class infrastructure for on-prem private cloud needs? Wouldn't that be the best of both worlds?
Repatriation “off” public cloud is NOT good news for VMware. People are leaving VMware too. The past 20 years is in the past. People got gouged with public cloud and gouged with VMware. They are looking for a third option. Open source is about to have its day in the sun. H/t Robert Slovick

Infrastructure as code is dead, and the suspect is System Initiative! I wrote about my experience using System Initiative to manage Oxide Computer Company resources. https://lnkd.in/eFzmqnrY

💯 shifting workloads to a cloud you control the security, cost, and location of is appealing to most CIOs surveyed, but the challenges can be daunting. We have a better path to a modernized private cloud with hardware and software designed and supported together by Oxide 🚀

When we started Oxide Computer Company, we told potential investors that the world was ready for this -- and that the internet would be rooting for us. Being a company that people cheer for isn't sufficient to build a business, of course, but wow does it ever help! Take, for example, this extraordinary note -- a self-described love letter to Oxide: https://lnkd.in/gWgTSrfC This piece gets to the heart of Oxide in so many ways, e.g.: "When buying something, you can either think of the purchase as a transaction, or you can think of the purchase as the beginning of a relationship. Being able to read pieces like this one makes me think whoever buys an Oxide computer is also building a relationship with Oxide." This is exactly the dream that we wanted to deliver upon, knowing that those deploying on-premises infrastructure have historically had to engage in constant battle with vendors who seem to devote their efforts solely to absolving themselves of any real responsibility. We came to view this problem as symptomatic of the stratified, fragmented solutions in the industry: when everyone delivers only a thin slice (the machine, the switch, the BMC, the BIOS, the OS, the hypervisor, the storage substrate, the control plane, etc.), they are driven to not only overly monetize that slice, but then to blame everyone else when the resulting system (which they frankly don't understand!) doesn't actually work. By delivering a holistic, rack-scale cloud computer, we have endeavored to solve both problems at once: to deliver not just a true solution to on-premises elastic infrastructure, but a foundation for a relationship by which we can take real responsibility for the service that our customers are providing to their customers. I think many see our holistic solution without necessarily understanding the deep sense of responsibility that serves as its motivation; it is singularly gratifying for that to be both seen and appreciated!

Those with even passing familiarity with Oxide Computer Company have run across our Requests for Discussion. This system -- and the software behind it -- has been the backbone of Oxide. What has made it work? And what have been the challenges over the past four years? On this episode of Oxide and Friends we will be joined by our Oxide colleagues who have been instrumental in both writing RFDs, in extending the process, and in building (and open sourcing!) the RFD system as we know it today. With apologies for the short notice, join us, in a special Europe-friendly time slot -- at the top of the hour! (9a Pacific, noon Eastern, 5p BST, 6p CET). And if you miss it, no worries -- recorded and syndicated as always! https://lnkd.in/gZS6Mctr

Last night I spent time configuring System Initiative to manage Oxide Computer Company resources. This capability didn't exist but I was able to add it in under an hour. Later today I'll continue to hack at this and support instances, SSH keys, etc. Thank you System Initiative and Oxide for granting me preview access to your products. Ya'll have been great to work with! Stay tuned for more content around these great products.
