During our two-year journey analyzing over 300k+ public GitHub repositories, we've pioneered new approaches to open source intelligence. At the core of this innovation is StarSearch, our advanced RAG-powered AI solution. By processing millions of GitHub issues and pull requests, StarSearch performs sophisticated cosine similarity searches across our vector database, extracting insights that even state-of-the-art language models can't access through their standard training data. This unique approach enables us to surface contextually relevant information from the deepest corners of the open source ecosystem. The natural next step in our journey is to extend our impact beyond GitHub. We’re beyond excited to announce our new home with the Linux Foundation, where we’ll collaborate to expand data insights within the LFX product, bringing even richer intelligence to the open source community. I want to acknowledge the people who made OpenSauced possible. From the Linux Foundation team to our founding team, customers, community contributors, investors, sponsors, advisors, friends, and family - your support and contributions have been essential to our success. This is just the beginning of what we're building together. #opensource #lfx #community

I can't stop thinking about the XZ vulnerability and how it was discovered through careful observation of suspicious activities and contributions. This backdoor identified could have enable remote code execution in so many projects. The story was social engineering and it started over 2 years prior when JiaT75 made their first innocuous contribution to the XZ dev config files. There is much speculation on what could have happened if this was not discovered, but we can be confident that this is not the last time an overworked maintainer succumbs to a social engineer. I have spent a lot of time looking and reading through the timeline of events, and it reads like a Hulu original documentary. I highly recommend giving a quick skim. I am linking it in the comments. #xz #opensource #security

OpenSauced raises 3.5 million from Boldstart, GitHub and more.. The role of open source has evolved significantly. No longer confined to nights and weekends, it now forms the foundation of critical infrastructure and data pipelines. The rapid advancement of AI has further underscored the need for trust, safety, and compliance within the open source ecosystem. Against this backdrop, we are pleased to announce that OpenSauced has secured a strategic investment round, led by boldstart ventures, with participation from the GitHub Fund, Precursor Venturesbasecase capitalNat Friedman, Guillermo Rauch, Matt Billman, Christian (Chris) Bach, Tom Preston-Werner. We are especially grateful to Ellen Chisa for her unwavering support and early advocacy of our vision. Why OpenSauced, Why Now? Brian Douglas' experience at GitHub illuminated the pivotal role of data in the success of open source projects. By engaging with maintainers and understanding their data needs, he witnessed firsthand how data-driven insights could catalyze growth. The trajectory of Kubernetes exemplifies this phenomenon, where contributor-led data analysis played a crucial role in its widespread adoption. This was learned from Brendan Burns and Kelsey Hightower when they appeared as guests on our Secret Sauce podcast. Trend We See Today, we observe a similar pattern with projects like pgvector, which is significantly impacting database valuations. However, our analysis reveals that a substantial portion of recent contributions originates from a single source. Looking at the last 6 months, 60% of the contributions that landed on main have come from the co-founder of Neon database. We built OpenSauced to make it easier to find insightful trends like these, but our next mission it to make them even more discoverable and actionable with AI Introducing StarSearch: AI-Powered Discovery OpenSauced was founded to address this need. Our platform empowers organizations to uncover actionable insights from open source data. Furthermore, we are leveraging AI to elevate this capability. StarSearch, our AI-powered discovery engine, identifies emerging trends and influential contributors within open source communities. This innovative tool has already garnered positive feedback from early adopters, including Mozilla Ventures and Snaplet. The Path Forward: Strategic Partnerships OpenSauced is actively engaging with startups and enterprises to explore how our AI-driven insights can enhance their open source strategies. We invite you to learn more about our platform and the potential it holds for your organization!
