Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has taken on some very important topics lately that are moving Governments forward. Having been working in this industry for 20 plus years, it is great to see the profession questioning status quo. The Silver Tsunami is real and it is becoming harder and harder to recruit and retain Government Employees. I have probably spent over two years of my professional career manually creating reports that may or may not be read by anyone, a big waste of time. It will be great when all reporting is automated, so we can spend our time being more strategic in analyzing and planning the future. I am hearing over and over again lately how great ERP systems are in the core accounting functions but the limitations in reporting and analysis. My recommendations to all my colleagues is to stop fighting the system and let it do what it is best at and look for another technology provider to leverage the system and provide the reporting automation and analysis we need. #GFOAisAmazing #Rethinking #Government #reportingautomation

Had the honor to work with Kansas City this week as they are making a transformative change in adopting Priority Based Budgeting. Humbled to partner with Micah Intermill, Chris Fabian, Krista Morrison , Brian Platt, Mike Mattson ensuring a successful process. It’s amazing to see the colloberation, communication and hard work of the entire Kansas City team to ensure the most efficient and data driven government possible.

Amazing the innovation and improved operations of each of these counties Really appreciated this quote: “Focus on data-driven decision-making by leveraging data analytics and business intelligence tools to inform policy decisions and improve service delivery.” All new programs and operations need data to support the funding required. Amazing that across all the winners the common item was making data more accessible with a focus on how the innovation will improve both internal operations and external engagement/ease of use.

Great article on Priority Based Budgeting. Very insightful: “A budget should communicate an organization’s strategic priorities and forward-looking direction—however, for many local government organizations today, the message the budget sends is that keeping the status quo is the priority. This is, in large part, to do with the process used to create the budget.” Making a budget process change is easier than many think. Changing budget process changes the conversation and leads to improved collaboration and improved outcomes to the community.

Priority Based Budgeting is not just a budget philosophy it’s a mindset. It is amazing when we take time to analyze all the services provided that we change our mindset to one of collaboration and efficiency. Governments provide so many services to their communities and it always amazes me how dedicated staff is to carry out the priorities of the community. #prioritybasedbudgeting #goodgovernment #collaboration

For 15 years I was focused on how to ensure the budget drives the highest potential service levels for the community. This was accomplished with a lot of discussions and understanding of the services. We did not have the data at the time to use in aligning the budget to the highest priorities and highest outcomes possible. With Priority Based Budgeting being the best practice in Governmental Budgeting, it is important to remember that anyone can accomplish this and the technology owned by the organization will work to accomplish the principles. The goal is to understand the services provided by the organization, cost these services with the current Chart of Accounts, and then priorities the services on a fair and equitable basis for alignment to the priorities of the organization. https://lnkd.in/gRv7ke4Z
