About us
The National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI) at the University of Nebraska (NU) is one of 15 Department of Defense (DOD)-established University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs) in the United States. UARCs are research organizations within a university or college that are established to provide or maintain essential engineering, research and/or development capabilities through a long-term, strategic relationship with the DoD. Established in 2012, with the DoD sponsor, United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), NSRI helps the Department of Defense and other federal agencies meet evolving national security objectives across all domains by responsively delivering innovative research and solutions while developing the workforce. The success of NSRI is driven by our collaboration with the University of Nebraska System, providing unique access to academic perspectives and research methods not currently found anywhere else in the DOD. Our research community includes more than 350 researchers in diverse disciplines and state-of-the-art facilities to generate innovative, real-world solutions. Furthermore, projects undertaken from an academic perspective ensures that critical skill sets are nurtured, developed and remain available for sustaining the mission in the future. NSRI has established and developed a research portfolio to address the research needs and advance the mission of USSTRATCOM and other DOD entities. Working with our sponsors and partners, we generate cutting-edge research solutions in the prevention, detection, protection, response and recovery from threats.

#NSRIFellow Dr. Edgar Cahoon, biochemist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has been named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors. Cahoon, George Holmes Professor of biochemistry and director of the university’s Center for Plant Science Innovation, is one of 170 new NAI fellows announced Dec. 10. Fellow status recognizes academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in developing inventions that have tangibly impacted quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society. Cahoon, an internationally recognized expert in plant lipid biotechnology, focuses his work on developing new types of oils that have improved functionalities for food, feed and industrial uses. His research to identify new genes, fatty acid structures and biochemical pathways in plants has generated 36 U.S. patents and improved crops’ nutritional and industrial value and agronomic performance. Cahoon said his success in translating discoveries to the marketplace reflects the university’s culture of innovation. “Our Center for Plant Science Innovation and our university has this philosophy of doing great science to make new discoveries and thinking about how we can apply those discoveries to benefit agriculture and society. That’s our strong point,” he said. “I’ve been very fortunate to be able to spend part of my career here at UNL, which has this spirit of innovation and the resources to do great science and make discoveries.” --- Read the full article ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gNi383rC Get details about NSRI's food, agriculture and environment security focus area ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gUbvBKSZ --- Through the National Strategic Research Institute at the University of Nebraska leading scientists deliver innovative national security research, technology, product and strategy development, training and exercises, and subject matter expertise to the U.S. Department of Defense and other federal agencies. Growing up in Honolulu, Hawaii, and later in Tucson, Arizona, #NSRIFellow Dr. Nicole Buan experienced how dependent human beings are on clean soil, clean water and healthy crops and animals to survive. As a child, she observed firsthand how pollution harms coral reefs and the marine life people depend on for food. She watched the famous tropical beach, Hanauma Bay, once crystal-clear and filled with colorful fish that could be fed by hand, become so choked with pollution that the authorities had to strictly limit access to allow the bay and the wildlife to recover. Today, Hanauma Bay is once again a thriving shallow reef ecosystem, although feeding the animals is no longer permitted. As a teenager in Tucson, she regularly hiked desert trails amongst the cactus, creosote and rattlesnakes and celebrated every monsoon season when intense thunderstorms drench the cracked, dusty soil, bringing precious rain that plants, animals and humans ration all year to be able to survive. These experiences engrained her desire to develop environmentally friendly technologies as well as faith that humans can find sustainable ways to coexist with nature. "It’s the same in Nebraska," Dr. Buan explained. "It’s just baked into growing up in these places — you understand how we have to steward the environment. If we want to continue as a species, we have to work to protect our natural resources. It’s a fundamental driving factor for me. We need our products to rest on a sustainable bio-based economy." Since she joined the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2010, Dr. Buan’s lab has contributed practical solutions toward her long-time goal, earning two patents for technologies that can enhance the production of renewable methane and isoprene, which could lead to the production of fuels such as natural gas and jet fuel. Two other pending patents focus on increasing crop growth for feed and fuel production. If these technologies can be developed further, they could help support the Nation’s energy independence and safe environment. --- Read the full feature ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gw5xbQgF --- #biology #biofuels #agriculture #nebraska #CWMD #WMD #CBRNE #nationalsecurity #highereducation #deterrence #mitigation #response #defenseresearch #defenseinnovation

In the newest episode of "Shaping the Future," Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., president of the University of Nebraska System, interviewed #NSRIFellow Dr. Carrick Detweiler, professor in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Computing. The discussion explored Detweiler's startup, Drone Amplified, and how his research is helping fight and prevent wildfires. Detweiler, Drone Amplified’s co-founder and chief executive officer, discussed the background, inspiration and uses of the company’s signature product, IGNIS; a drone-based system that allows firefighters to control wildfires while staying out of harm’s way. He also talks about the critical role commercialization plays in bringing university research and discoveries from the lab to the marketplace. --- Tune in 📺 ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gMKSbCXp --- #drones #UAVs #wildfires #nationalsecurity #homelandsecurity #ISTAR #defenseinnovation #defensetech #military #UNL #UNLresearch

The Nebraska Deterrence Lab (NDL) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) has partnered with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to help run a series of space deterrence wargames. As part of the team of nine NATO nations, NDL has assisted in developing and testing a deterrence framework that would anticipate and address future security challenges. The first wargame took place in the Netherlands on April 29-May 2, 2024. #NSRIFellows Dr. Michelle Black, professor of political science, and Dr. Deanna House, professor of information systems and quantitative analysis, co-lead NDL. Black’s experience working at the Department of Defense and House’s expertise in cybersecurity bring significant value to their own work as well as more comprehensive ideas in shared research. “NATO has invited academics before as individual experts, but this is the first time that they’ve partnered with a whole lab,” Black said. “And I do think that we’re the right lab for the job. We’re really open to understanding and thinking about concepts differently and have a history with them. It made sense.” --- Read the article ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gN2VFXJw --- #wargame #deterrence #strategicdeterrence #NATO #nuclearweapons #nationalsecurity #homelandsecurity #Omaha
