The media tend to focus on negative news. It is great to see the success of our young people, so important for them as individuals and for the country - the skills they are developing are essential for everyone’s future prosperity. The recently published TIMSS results for mathematics show positive news for England. Considering the disruptions caused by the Covid pandemic between TIMSS 2019 and TIMSS 2023, England's performance is particularly noteworthy. The substantial gains seen in year 5 during the 2019 TIMSS assessment have been sustained, and the year 9 maths score for TIMSS 2023 is England's highest ever. In contrast, most other countries, including those that typically excel, experienced a decline in their performance.
