I have always been captivated by the intersection of creativity and science. Every night, I unwind by painting paint-by-numbers, which reflects my appreciation for art as a complement to the precision of science. This creative inclination inspired me when decorating our new office. Years ago, I began receiving JAMA articles weekly and was struck by how they combined art and science—the stunning artwork on the covers paired with the scientific insights inside. This concept of "the art and science of medicine" resonated deeply, and we adopted it as our tagline. I started framing these covers and displaying them in our offices, creating a gallery of over 200 pieces spanning back to 2001. These covers are no longer produced, making them even more meaningful. I began my journey in telehealth in 2007 when a patient, relocating to Dubai, expressed a desire to continue our sessions without the need for constant travel. They introduced me to Skype, a platform I had never encountered before, which opened a new door for remote care. Even in a telehealth setting, I found I could diagnose issues that other doctors often missed, as I focused on truly listening to my patients. Building strong relationships is at the heart of exceptional care, and I discovered that these connections can be nurtured even remotely. Working with patients from around the globe has taught me invaluable lessons. Each day, I learn something new from my patients, just as I learned about Skype. As public health initiatives evolve, we need to begin to incorporate new initiatives such as genomic testing in order to move forward and make an impact for our aging population. Implementing genomics into public health can help lengthen patient health lifespans by being proactive instead of reactive. Nine out of the 10 leading causes of death and disease in the U.S. can be overridden with our genome. That’s why I’m advocating for pharmacists to be credentialed genomic consultants. It starts with education; We must embrace innovative strategies and integrate them into the medical curriculum.
