Getting enough sleep is crucial for staying safe on the job. When you don’t get enough sleep, your body and mind don’t function at their best. Lack of sleep can lead to: ∙ Reduced focus: A tired mind struggles to concentrate, making it easier to miss important details. ∙ Impaired judgment: Sleep deprivation can cloud your judgment, leading to poor decision-making. ∙ Slower reaction times: Your brain can’t react quickly to unexpected situations, increasing your chances of having an accident. ∙ Decreased physical performance: Tasks that require strength and coordination are more difficult and potentially more dangerous. To help you get the rest you need, follow these tips: ∙ Aim for a minimum of 7 to 8 hours of sleep. ∙ Create a sleep-friendly environment by keeping your bedroom dark and quiet, have a comfortable temperature, and avoid screens before bed. ∙ Avoid caffeine and nicotine in the hours leading up to bedtime. ∙ Stick to a routine by going to bed and waking up at the same time. Going to work shouldn't be scary! --- Workplace violence ranges from verbal abuse to physical assaults directed toward people at work. Your employer is responsible for enforcing all policies and procedures that maintain a safe work environment. You are responsible for staying alert, reporting suspicious or violent behavior immediately, and not being violent yourself. Prevent workplace violence before it starts. Attend a class or training session on recognizing and de-escalating potentially violent situations. Let your supervisor know if you notice areas around the jobsite that need security measures such as better lighting or surveillance cameras. De-escalation prevents violence. If a co-worker is visibly upset, talk to them using a calm voice and relaxed body language. Don’t raise your voice or make sudden movements. Let the person express their concerns. Show them that you’re listening by acknowledging their feelings without arguing. Keep a safe distance and avoid physical contact. If prevention fails and a violent incident occurs, the most basic plan for safety in a workplace violence situation is: RUN, HIDE, FIGHT. Your best chance of survival is to run. Get away from the danger as fast as you can. Once you’re safe, call 911. If you can’t escape, hide. Silence your cell phone. Call or text 911. Block doors or entrances. Stay away from windows. As a last resort, and only if your life is in immediate danger, fight off the attacker. Use anything you have available, like a hammer, a piece of wood, a fire extinguisher, or a pipe. Understand the jobsite’s emergency plan. Know how to report the situation, so your co-workers, authorities, and first responders can react quickly. If you are prone to violent outbursts, work on de-escalating your own anger. When you notice your frustration and anger building, stop for a minute. Take time to calm down, and don’t let anger dictate your actions. Take a walk and get some fresh air. Take slow, deep breaths for a minute or more. You’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll calm down when you slow down a little bit. From Safety Meeting Outlines, Inc. - Vol 47. Issue 39, September 23, 2024
