Searching for a job can be daunting, especially with the abundance of online advice. Not all of them are correct. 🔹 Online Job Boards Are the Best Way to Find Openings - Many jobs are filled through referrals and networking. 🔹 The More Applications, the Better - 'Spraying and praying,' is not effective. 🔹 Meeting Every Qualification is Necessary - Apply if you meet about 80%-85% of the requirements. 🔹 Cover Letter Isn't Necessary - Not mandatory but a compelling cover letter allows you to 'talk' to the employer. 🔹 Changing Careers Is Impossible - Many people make major career changes, moving beyond switching jobs to transitioning into related fields. 🔹 You Can't Get Hired During a Recession - Economic downturns pose challenges, however, companies will still hire. 🔹 Accept the First Offer - While taking the first job offer can be tempting, you would not want to learn that the role is not a good fit after a few months. 🔹 Your Online Presence Doesn't Matter - Employers will research you online before hiring. Keep your social media site settings private. #jobsearch #jobsearching

That 'Open to Work' Green Banner. ❇ Is it a sign of desperation? Not necessarily. In fact, it's a great way to let your network know that you're looking for new opportunities. After all, being laid off or having your company restructure is not your fault. ❇ Remember, LinkedIn is a networking site. That banner could catch the eye of someone you haven't talked to in a while. Who knows what opportunities that could lead to? ❇ Don't let that banner define you as a person. It's simply a way to let others know that you're on the job hunt. As the saying goes, "let everyone know you're looking for a job." #jobsearching #jobsearch

HOW TO AVOID FRAUDULENT JOB POSTINGS When you are desperate for a job, it might be hard to recognize fraudulent job postings, particularly with scammers becoming increasingly savvy. Obviously, job searching can be unpleasant, but pay attention to red flags to avoid falling for these scams. Illegitimate job postings will do all of some of these: 🛑 Absurd Promises - Scammers will entice job seekers with promises of high salaries, minimal work hours, or rapid career advancement. Scammers will entice job seekers with promises of high salaries, minimal 🛑 Lack Detailed Job Description - If the job description lacks clarity and coherence, it's likely a fraud. 🛑 Requests for Personal Information - Be skeptical of job postings that ask for sensitive personal information upfront, such as Social Security numbers (even the last four numbers), bank account details, or copies of identification. 🛑 Immediate Job Offers Without Interviews - Legitimate employers follow an organized hiring procedure involving interviews and background checks. 🛑 Requirements for Upfront Payment - Be wary of job advertisements that require applicants to pay upfront costs for equipment, training, or other alleged expenses. 🛑 Pressure to Act Quickly - Scammers often employ tactics to create a sense of urgency, pressuring applicants to accept offers or provide personal information hastily. 🛑 Lack of Verifiable Contact Information - Phone numbers, email addresses, and physical addresses. If any of these happen, step back, stay safe and continue your job search. #jobscams #jobsearching #joboffers #fradulentjobpostings

DO YOU FEEL OVERQUALIFIED FOR THE JOB? What happens when you find the perfect job listing and learn you have more experience than the employer is seeking? They may be looking for someone with five years of experience, and you have been in the field for ten years. If you want the job, there are several things to consider: ✔️ First, think about the job itself. If you can add value, emphasize this in your resume by highlighting your accomplishments. In the interview, state how you can bring the skills they need and let them know it doesn’t matter if the job title is a bit ‘lower’ than someone at your level would typically want. ✔️ Sometimes, you might want fewer responsibilities, less pressure, and a better work-life balance. Let’s say you have been a manager in charge of direct reports throughout your career. It’s ok to want fewer or no employees to manage. ✔️ Another reason may be that you are interested in changing careers. In this case, beginning at a lower level might be necessary. If you have taken courses, obtained certifications, and upgraded your skillset to meet their needs, this will show interest on your part. ✔️ Regarding salary, it might be lower than someone at your level would seek. If you can afford it, let the employer know you are willing to take a pay cut because you want the job. #jobsearching #jobsearch #overqualified

WHAT DOES THE JOB SEARCH LOOK LIKE IN 2024 If you stay up-to-date with the following, you can compete with others uncomfortable with this new landscape of job searching. Also, it will be crucial to become comfortable with digital technology. ✔️ Job Search Platforms – These are continuously changing. You must rely on more than one strategy. Becoming familiar with websites specific to industries is important, meaning going beyond LinkedIn and Google search engines. ✔️ Remote Work – This will continue to play a significant role. It will be essential to become comfortable with virtual communication tools. If you are not using these, learn how because these skills will give you an advantage over the competition. ✔️ Professional Networking Online – This will continue to be necessary. Join online industry groups and use LinkedIn to join groups related to your career. Often, these groups will post job opportunities. Make sure you create a great LinkedIn profile. Remember, LinkedIn is not a typical ‘social media’ site. In fact, it is a two-way street. Yes, you can use it to search for jobs. However, if you have a stellar profile, recruiters can find you. ✔️ Modern Resume Writing – You can no longer send the same resume to every job you want. Since most companies use ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) software to evaluate incoming resumes (300-500 per day), you must include information from their job descriptions in your document. ✔️ Virtual Videos Interviews – This is becoming the norm. Become familiar with your computer, lighting, sound, and background. Remember to look into the camera when talking to the hiring manager. It may be weird, but it really makes a difference. You know how you are supposed to make ‘eye contact’ when interviewing in person? Well, looking into the camera allows you to do this. If you practice enough, you will become comfortable with it. Basic interview skills also apply to video interviews. Practice, practice, practice does make perfect, but you do not want to sound rehearsed. Be yourself. Record yourself and listen to the audio first without video to see if you are using filler phrases: like, you know, and um. We all do it, but I guarantee you will get better once you become aware of it.   ✔️ Soft Skills – There is something called a ‘job fit.’ Once you make it through several rounds of interviews, it comes down to your personality and ability to be flexible, adaptable, and use problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Conducting your job search should be creative and strategic. Keeping a calendar of your job search efforts is best so the process is manageable. The job market will always be competitive, so leverage your skills (even if they are from different industries) and stay persistent. #jobsearching #jobsearch

Having trouble nailing that interview? Try a mock interview or two. Even better if you can find someone in your industry to conduct it. If you can't find anyone, you can always practice in front of a mirror or record yourself answering questions. Not only will it help you iron out any possible awkwardness, but it will also give you valuable feedback on how to improve. Practice makes perfect and can make all the difference, especially while we are still in such a competitive market.
