Have you seen this new feature on Google Search? You can now see what content is labeled ‘popular’ for specific segments (see image below). These blue and gray labels will tell you the type of people who are checking out the site (e.g., ‘popular with shopping enthusiasts’ or ‘popular with runners’). Honestly, it makes me wonder what Google deems worthy of a ‘popular’ label… 100 clicks an hour? Low bounce rate? Someone clicking further into the site or even making a purchase? More and more, these labels seem to show favoritism toward certain sites and retailers. It will probably become a paid opportunity soon, just like the blue checkmarks on social media.
