Climate change is real. Since 1984, we've been providing solutions that help inspire change.
About us
Since 1984, Island Press has been a trusted source of environmental information and solutions. We publish the best new ideas about how to protect the environment—and work tirelessly to spread those ideas to help people make a positive difference in the world. Each year, we publish some 30 new books on such vital topics as conservation biology, marine science, land conservation, green building, sustainable agriculture, climate change, and ecological restoration. But we are much more than a book publisher. Island Press authors and experts inform and inspire change by reaching out to millions of people through the press, online, in the classroom, and in person. We host conferences, teach courses, and speak in the community on relevant environmental issues. Today, with more than 800 titles in print, an active slate of author programs and events, and a growing online presence, we have emerged as the nation’s leading publisher of books on environmental issues and a leading communicator of environmental ideas. All of this is possible because Island Press has helped to create a community of teachers, scientists, policymakers, communicators, and citizen activists who are passionate about sharing knowledge and promoting better stewardship of the natural world.

I never thought I’d say this, but some of the most compelling climate action strategies I've come across are coming from... the Pentagon. Yes, that pentagon 😵 When we talk about tackling climate change, we think of cities, tech innovators, policymakers—even artists. But military leaders? Not the usual suspects. And yet, Sherri Goodman’s Threat Multiplier, published by Island Press, reveals exactly why the U.S. military is stepping up—and how they’re doing it in ways that should make all of us rethink what climate action looks like. Goodman, the Pentagon’s first Chief Environmental Officer, takes us behind closed doors, where climate change isn’t just a policy issue—it’s a security risk. Think hurricanes devastating bases, conflicts over scarce resources, or geopolitical tensions supercharged by a changing climate. The military doesn't just see climate as an environmental problem; they see it as a threat to global stability. And they’re acting. From incorporating climate resilience into war games and disaster relief to reimagining bases to withstand the chaos of a warming world, the military’s shift is nothing short of remarkable. This isn’t just strategy—it’s SURVIVAL. Reading this book over the weekend, I kept thinking: if one of the most rigid, tradition-bound institutions on Earth can pivot to prioritize climate action, what’s stopping the rest of us? It’s a powerful reminder that solutions don’t always come from where you expect—and that all bits count when it comes to securing a livable future. If you want a fresh perspective on the climate fight (and a few surprising insights on military leadership), give Threat Multiplier a read. You might just find the inspiration—or strategy—you’ve been looking for. On a related note, I’m working on a book to simplify sustainability—without the guilt trips. If you know of a publisher who believes in unlocking real opportunities, I’m all ears. #ClimateChange #Leadership #BookReview #Publications
