🌊The sustainable blue economy presents a huge opportunity, with oceans valued at $24 trillion—yet underinvestment and environmental degradation threaten this potential. A recent article from the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership explores how aligning financial flows with sustainable ocean practices could unlock trillions in economic benefits, create millions of jobs, and help conserve marine ecosystems. Governments, investors, and innovators must collaborate to drive this shift. With initiatives like Sustainable Ocean Plans (SOPs), the transition to a regenerative ocean economy is within reach. 🌊 Investing in Ocean and Climate Resilience at COP29 We were delighted to hear from Investable Oceans' Director of Operations and Strategy, Helena Janulis, about her experience at COP29 in Azerbaijan. In addition to managing the creation and organization of the Ocean Pavilion through Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Helena represented Investable Oceans on a panel led by NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration titled “Investing in Resilience: How the Public and Private Sectors are Bolstering Ocean and Climate Resilience.” The panel highlighted how partnerships between the public and private sectors have been advancing cutting-edge technologies for gathering coastal and ocean data—essential for fostering a climate-ready nation. The discussion, which was moderated by Dr. Richard (Rick) Spinrad and included panelists Dr. Tom Corringham, Leslie-Ann McGee, PMP, MEM, and Carl Gouldman, emphasized initiatives like the Ocean Enterprise and Ocean-based Climate Resilience Accelerators (OCRA), which are mobilizing private sector innovation to address climate challenges. From Helena, “During COP29 in Baku, I was reminded of the incredible power of collaboration, innovation, and shared determination to address the climate challenges we face. For the third year in a row, the Ocean Pavilion successfully brought the ocean to the heart of key climate dialogues and negotiations, showcasing its vital role in climate ecosystems and solutions. Witnessing the flow of people, organizations, and groundbreaking ideas and commitments was truly energizing.” We’re proud of Helena’s contributions to this critical conversation! 📸 Take a look at some moments from the event and watch the panel below. https://lnkd.in/dH9rm8eb #COP29 #BlueEconomy #ClimateResilience #InvestableOceans #OceanInnovation

Here's a great, quick Sunday read from the World Economic Forum. The Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR) is a recent joint initiative by Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Panama to protect one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. CMAR connects existing marine protected areas and ensures safe migratory routes for many species. With the help of advanced technologies—such as satellite tracking and AI—CMAR is revolutionizing how we monitor and protect these critical ecosystems, while also combatting illegal fishing in real-time. As we push towards the global goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030, technology is proving to be a powerful tool. The future of our oceans depends on bold, innovative action! 🤝🌊💥 I am privileged to work alongside this vibrant, energetic community that truly understands that when we come together, we can have a meaningful and measurable impact. The spirit of collaboration and commitment at the 1000 Ocean Startups Annual Gathering was invigorating (and exhausting!). A heartfelt thank you goes to our Steering Committee – Co-Chairs Ted Janulis and Ingrid H. Maurstad, along with Alexis Grosskopf, Christian Lim, Gracie White, and Millicent Pitts – for their leadership and vision and for trusting me to lead the Lighthouse. You have has steered us with ambition, passion and genuine altrusim, making 1000OS an essential force driving ocean innovation and impact. Over the course of our two-day program, we engaged in deep dives led by 1000OS members, which allowed for honest and substantive explorations on real ways to accelerate our impact - such as better communication, faster on-the-water piloting, increasing diversity, and improving impact measurement. We explored the challenges and opportunities ahead, while members reverse-pitched start-ups that are at the frontlines of solving some of the world’s most pressing problems. The featured solutions illustrated how ocean startups are shaping a sustainable ocean economy right now, not in the future. We were also honored to hear from two incredible Friends of Ocean Action: Maria Damanaki, who shared her forward-thinking insights on the Blue Future, and Pascal Lamy, who spoke about generating ocean finance at scale. Their wisdom reminded us of both the opportunities and the immense responsibility we have to Our Ocean. I have to thank all our 49 members, our partners, and our supporters for your ongoing contributions. Together, we are shaping a future where both people and our ocean planet can thrive. Stay tuned for next week’s edition of The Ripple newsletter, where we’ll share key takeaways and outline the next steps in accelerating ocean impact. #oceanaction #oceaninnovation #impactinvesting #sdg14 #radicalcollaboration #1000OS

As coral reefs face their fourth global bleaching event this year—the most severe on record—an Emergency Session on Coral Reefs will take place at COP16, starting this Monday. COP16 is a crucial global platform for biodiversity and climate action, and this session, in partnership with the International Coral Reef Initiative and Global Fund for Coral Reefs, will unite scientists, coral state leaders, and conservation experts to present immediate, scalable strategies to protect these vital ecosystems. An estimated 75% of coral reefs were impacted by bleaching-level temperatures this year - a sobering statistic that summarizes the urgent need for collective action. https://lnkd.in/e6S88BCp #COP16 #CoralReefs #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #SaveOurReefs #GlobalAction #Bleaching #ClimateChange

🌍 The recently released Planetary Health Check Report 2024 by Planetary Boundaries Science (PBScience) evaluates our planet's condition in an easy to understand and engaging way: "Just as a blood test provides insights into a human body's health and identifies areas of concern, the Planetary Health Check evaluates the 13 control variables across the 9 Planetary Boundary (PB) processes to report on Earth’s stability, resilience, and life-support functions." According to PBS, six out of nine planetary boundaries—like Climate Change, Land System Change, and Freshwater Use—have already been breached. A thought-provoking read - definitely worth checking out! https://lnkd.in/eHp55PEm #PlanetaryHealth #Sustainability #PlanetaryBoundaries #ScienceForAction #EarthSystemScience #SustainableDevelopment

🌊 A little good news for your Sunday feed! 1.8 million hectares of coral reefs across Indonesia, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Cabo Verde are set to receive a major boost, thanks to a newly established $35m impact loan from the investment teams behind BNP Paribas and Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas. The initiative is kicking off with an initial $2.4m investment aimed at restoring reefs and improving the livelihoods of up to 110,000 coastal community members. As part of a pioneering Blue Finance facility, these funds will support 115 Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and promote reef-positive businesses like sustainable fisheries, ecotourism, and blue carbon credits. It’s a timely reminder of how impactful partnerships can protect biodiversity while supporting local economies — helping both ocean ecosystems and the communities that rely on them. https://lnkd.in/ePP-kGk3 #ImpactInvesting #CoralReefs #MarineConservation #BlueEconomy #SustainableFinance #MPAs
