On the eve of the 46th Consultative Meeting of Contracting Parties to the London Convention/19th Meeting of Parties to the London Protocol, Ocean Visions calls upon delegates to refrain from acting on a draft resolution to add additional marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) techniques to Annex 4 of London Protocol.
Such action would risk undermining critical research, development, & demonstration (RD&D) efforts, which are essential for assessing the safety and effectiveness of mCDR.
It could also disrupt ongoing international efforts under the UNFCCC and IPCC to set clear rules and guidance on carbon removal techniques employed to achieve the Paris Agreement targets.
Rather than slowing needed research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) of marine carbon removal, we need to prioritize comprehensive RD&D, and this includes the private sector’s pivotal role in driving innovation. Multisectoral collaboration is key to advancing scientific knowledge in this emerging field.
We urge delegates to take a measured, science-based approach to ensure decisions that support both climate action and ocean health.
