IDRA- Celebrated exceptional achievements in water at the WC24 Gala dinner hosted by the Department of Energy Abu Dhabi. The esteemed awards included the #GlobalIndustrialWaterReuseChampionAward (supported by WateReuse Association, US International Chamber of Commerce, University of Pennsylvania, Veolia, Veralto, and International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA). The awards went to Microsoft and Amazon Web Services (AWS), presented by Jon Freedman and Bart Weiss. IDRA President Mr. Fady Juez and IDRA Secretary General Ms. Shannon McCarthy presented the IDRA Presidential Distinction and Lifetime Achievement Awards. The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to John Lienhard, while Distinction Awards were presented to H.E. Abdullah Alabdulkareim, President of Saudi Water Authority, H.E. Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Energy Abu Dhabi, Mr. Khalid Abdulsamad, Executive Director, ADNOC Group, and Eng. Ahmed Al Shamsi. The International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA) has entered into a strategic partnership with the CEO Water Mandate, an initiative of the UN Global Compact, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing global water stewardship. This collaboration seeks to unite expertise and resources from both organizations to tackle pressing global water challenges and promote sustainable practices in water desalination and reuse. Key objectives of the MoU include Driving Collective Actions, Enhancing Data Access and Capacity Building and Strengthening Influence and Advocacy. The International Desalination and Reuse Association is excited to announce the election of Mr. Jon Freedman as its President for the 2024-2026 term. As the global head of policy and stakeholder engagement for water quality at Veralto, Mr. Freedman brings a wealth of expertise and a passionate commitment to advancing sustainable water solutions. His extensive contributions to the desalination and water reuse sectors make him an outstanding choice to lead IDRA into its next chapter. In his acceptance remarks, Mr. Freedman expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, “It is an honor to lead IDRA during such a pivotal time for water sustainability. Together with our members and partners, we will continue to drive innovation and collaboration to address the global water challenges we face.” Joining Mr. Freedman in leadership are several accomplished professionals: Mr. Carlos Cosín, CEO of Almar Water Solutions, will serve as 1st Vice President; Mr. Hoon Hyung, President of LG Water Solutions, has been appointed as 2nd Vice President; Mrs. Jantje Johnson, CEO of Orangeboat, will take on the role of Secretary of the Board; and Mr. Imad Makhzoumi, CEO of Enoia, will serve as Treasurer. The First Global Hackathon for Sustainable Water Desal and Reuse has successfully concluded, marking a significant milestone in the quest for innovative water solutions. Sharzi Mukri from ACWA Power remarked, "It is the most long-awaited hackathon we've been learning and conceptualizing to do, which is the first global hackathon for sustainable water desal and reuse." Abdullah Alshehi from Khalifa University added, "It is really helpful for us to compete in the 1st ever hackathon since we are working on a senior design project focusing on water treatment processes, so we can implement and apply our knowledge and our problem statement here." Leading the team as a #SubjectMatterExpert was an incredibly rewarding experience. The journey was filled with brainstorming, collaboration, and creative problem-solving, all focused on addressing critical water challenges globally. It was an enriching experience discussing essential desalination issues with industrial experts and presenting our solution, "AI-driven Efficiency Optimization for Sustainable Water Desalination."
