About us
Through strategic litigation, training, communication, activism and research, the Institute for Justice advances a rule of law under which individuals can control their destinies as free and responsible members of society. IJ litigates to secure economic liberty, educational choice, private property rights, freedom of speech and other vital individual liberties, and to restore constitutional limits on the power of government. In addition, IJ trains law students, lawyers and policy activists in the tactics of public interest litigation. Through these activities, IJ illustrates and extends the benefits of freedom to those whose full enjoyment of liberty is denied by government.

VICTORY! Wilmington, Delaware’s towing and impound practices were among the most predatory in the nation—enabling private tow companies to profit off *innocent* drivers. However, after IJ teamed up with city residents to file a lawsuit, the city decided to work with IJ to end the predation and replace it with a system that is a model of fairness. This morning a U.S. District Court approved the settlement, bringing the lawsuit to an end. Read more: https://lnkd.in/et_Jdxq7

Today IJ filed a petition for certiorari with the #SupremeCourt on behalf of Erma Wilson, who had her life turned upside down after a conviction in which her prosecutor also worked for the judge presiding over her case. This case is one of the most brazen and obvious examples of prosecutorial abuse in modern American history, yet Ralph Petty, the prosecutor, and the others who oversaw this miscarriage of justice have never been held accountable for their actions in a court of law. The petition raises important constitutional questions concerning civil rights and the constitutional right to a fair and neutral criminal trial.
