My last participation in the conference in 2024, International Conference on Tsunami Risk Reduction and Resilience, Kerala, India. People easily forget even tragic events. On 26 December 2004, 20 years ago, 230,000 people in 15 countries lost their lives to the Indian Ocean Tsunami. I don't remember well about this tsunami but I do remember the tsunami on 11 March 2011 in Japan. I was at the Prime Minister's Office of Japan to help the survivors. I think I will never forget the 2 stories of small children, which made me cry a lot at that time. - A girl was trapped by tsunami with her mom but the girl could reach to save herself. Her mon was speared by debris and asked a girl for help. She couldn't do anything to see her mom pass away, witnessing at an interview. - A boy was searching for his mom with a TV crew and found his mom and her relative dead in a car, that was hit by the tsunami. Instead of crying, the boy said "It's good to know that my mom tried to help others." We need to realise that there are so many sad stories and practitioners really need to work on reducing the risks of natural hazards.
