I recently responded to a post with the below comment and felt it was worth sharing. Happy to hear peoples thoughts or arguments. Fair Market Value depends on the industry, endemic/non-endemic brand, brand's perception in the market, deliverables, brand competitiveness, and brand financials. It is difficult or impossible to create blanket FMV for athletes because each deal can be infinitely specific. When I was signing athletes at Red Bull, we could undercut the competition because of the value Red Bull brings to an athlete's overall brand vs. an insurance company or something that deteriorates the athlete's brand. An athlete's specific interest can also dramatically increase their value depending on a brand's motives and where they need to specifically talk to the market. Athletes are not out-of-home ad buys or digital ad buys; they are humans that are 100% unique. Why has this never been a topic with pro athletes who have been doing NIL deals for over 50 years or longer? NIL is not new and has always existed, including with very young athletes from action and alternative sports. The weirdest thing about college NIL is the fascination with how much athletes are paid. This drives opportunities with new brands away from entering the mix.
