Great day with The University of Texas at Austin and the Brand Innovators team hosting a Sports & Culture Summit. Thanks to Trey Holder and Sarah Baumgartner for the amazing hospitality and opportunity. Enabling brands, college athletes and their fandom to connect in authentic and meaningful ways is an emerging opportunity that creates engagement for niche audiences at scale. Awesome to spend a day with these folks and Opendorse was excited to participate. On a personal note, saw another two Heisman trophy’s so adding that to the collection.

The landscape of marketing is constantly evolving, and within this realm, college athletes are emerging as influential figures, particularly as micro-influencers. While they may not have the same level of fame as headline-grabbing athletes, the data on micro-influencers speaks volumes. Research shows that micro-influencers drive up to 60% more engagement compared to their larger counterparts, presenting an attractive option for brands seeking authentic connections with their target audience. Marketers are increasingly turning to micro-influencers, with 44% preferring them for their cost-effectiveness and superior engagement rates, highlighting the unique value proposition these athletes bring. On platforms like Instagram, micro-influencers achieve an impressive average engagement rate of 3.86%, significantly outperforming mega-influencers at 1.21%. Moreover, 82% of consumers express a greater likelihood of following recommendations from micro-influencers over more prominent figures, underscoring the ability of college athletes to drive tangible marketing results and establish genuine connections with their followers. At Opendorse we recognize the potential of collaborating with these up-and-coming stars. By harnessing the authenticity of college athletes as micro-influencers, brands can access highly engaged audiences who are deeply dedicated to their favorite athletes and teams.
