At HCA Healthcare’s annual Awards of Distinction ceremony, we honor one HCA Healthcare volunteer with the Frist Humanitarian Award. This prestigious award recognizes the highest achievements in serving others. As we continue our #DaysofCaring, we were pleased to recognize Paulette Bennett, a dedicated volunteer at HCA Healthcare’s Ogden Regional Medical Center in Utah. Throughout her 13 years of service, Paulette has volunteered thousands of hours to develop the pet therapy program at the hospital. Together with Miss Sophie, her beloved four-legged companion, Paulette helps to comfort and uplift patients, visitors and colleagues. “I can’t think of anything more fulfilling or nice to see that you’ve made a little difference in somebody’s life,” Paulette explained. Outside of the hospital, she is a member of the Animal Assisted Crisis Response Team and has worked with Miss Sophie to support numerous communities affected by disaster or reeling from trauma. Together as a team, Paulette and Miss Sophie set an example for how valuable pet therapy programs can be, serving in local schools, museums and community centers To learn more about how Paulette and Miss Sophie are making a positive impact, visit https://bit.ly/3BFz2sY. #PositiveImpact

During HCA Healthcare’s #DaysofCaring, we’re spotlighting patient Betsy Helbing Garza, a veterinarian, wife and mother, who is thankful this holiday season to be living pain-free. 15 years ago, the Austin, Texas native fell through a hole in a 40-story bridge and broke her back. Her spinal cord injury left her unable to walk. “About two months after my injury, I started having this awful shooting pain in my legs that just felt like I was being electrocuted,” Betsy explained. Dr. Scott Falci, neurosurgeon at HCA HealthONE Falci Institute for Spinal Cord Injuries in Englewood, Colorado, explained that paraplegics, quadriplegics and those who suffer an amputation often face phantom pain. Through intraoperative electrical recordings within the spinal cord, Dr. Falci can pinpoint where the pain is coming from and provide treatment to help control pain. Dr. Falci performed a dorsal root entry zone procedure on Betsy, untethering her spinal cord and helping to eliminate her pain. Within a few days of Betsy’s complex surgery, her neuropathic pain was gone. “This surgery absolutely changed my life for the better,” Betsy shared. “Not only do I have decreased pain, I have zero pain.” This advanced surgery allowed Betsy to maintain muscle strength in her core and her legs, which is vital in performing surgeries as a veterinarian. HCA Healthcare reposted this
Throughout December, we're sharing festive stories that celebrate the season and the many ways that HCA Healthcare's more than 309,000 colleagues show up to care for our patients, communities and each other. The Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers Baseball Club recently took detours from their sports fields to make the holiday season extra special for pediatric patients at HCA Healthcare’s Medical City Children's Hospital in Dallas, Texas. As part of Medical City Healthcare, Medical City Children's Hospital is a 254-bed comprehensive, award-winning pediatric healthcare facility offering a Level IV NICU, full-service children's hospital, Level IV Maternal hospital and an adult hospital on the same campus. During their respective visits, the professional sports teams donned Santa Claus hats and visited with HCA Healthcare patients to bring smiles and cheer. Thank you to our doctors, nurses, child life specialists and colleagues for working with the players to make the season bright for our youngest patients. Stay tuned as our #DaysOfCaring series continues! #CareLikeFamily

“I’m really grateful for the gift I’ve been given to be able to have a greater appreciation for the time we have here.” Marc Strode, senior leader at HCA Healthcare affiliate Methodist Healthcare System, shared his gratitude after receiving life-saving care. At the age of 49, the husband and father of four was diagnosed with stage IV prostate cancer. Persistent back pain led him to get diagnostic imaging, revealing cancer. Upon his diagnosis, Marc’s colleagues became his care team. “It felt really comforting to know this family was taking care of me now,” Marc shared. Thanks to the treatment and expert cancer care he received at Methodist Healthcare, Marc had the opportunity to ring the bell in March 2023 — commemorating the end of his cancer treatment. Watch to learn how Marc’s Methodist Healthcare family supported him and how the experience continues to impact his life today. #CareLikeFamily #HealthierTomorrows

Across HCA Healthcare, more than 45,000 active and affiliated physicians continuously seek new care strategies to meet the unique, complex and critical needs of our patients. HCA Healthcare colleagues continually inspire us through their unwavering dedication and remarkable resilience. Today, we’re thrilled to congratulate Amber Jones, emergency nurse at HCA Florida Healthcare on joining our team of more than 99,000 compassionate nurses across HCA Healthcare. In 2016, Amber was involved in a life-altering car accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down. The Florida mother of six didn’t let this diminish her dream of pursing nursing. Following her accident, this passion for nursing grew and she enrolled at Galen College of Nursing, a part of HCA Healthcare and one of America’s leading educators of nurses. Amber made a lasting impact by becoming the first paraplegic student to graduate from Galen College of Nursing in Florida. Her achievement is a testament to her determination and the power of the inclusive learning environment available at Galen. Through adaptive resources and supportive faculty, Galen helped Amber find ways to meet the demands of her clinical training, allowing her to build confidence and competence. “I am just very blessed and very thankful to be able to have the opportunity to practice my skills,” Amber explained. “Anything is possible. You just have to put in the work.” Amber embodies the power of perseverance and the belief that dreams are attainable, no matter the obstacles. “Despite whatever happens to you, it’s possible to be something still and follow your dreams.” Please join us in celebrating Amber’s accomplishments and wishing her well in her nursing career!
