Did you know a third of our food is wasted before it’s eaten? What if we could cut food waste in half by rethinking how and where we grow it? Globally, 13% of food is lost between harvest and retail, and another 19% is wasted in households, restaurants, and stores. This isn’t just about wasted food—it’s about the resources, energy, and opportunities lost along the way. How can we turn this around? 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲: By growing food closer to where it’s consumed, we can shorten the supply chain. This means fresher produce and extended shelf life, reducing spoilage in stores and at home. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀: Controlled environments minimize losses from pests, disease, and handling. This ensures more of what is grown actually makes it to the consumer. 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: More precise production planning based on real-time demand eliminates the issue of overproduction that often leads to surplus crops being discarded, reducing waste from the start. Food waste is a challenge, but I’ve seen first hand how vertical farming offers a fresh approach to tackling this global issue. What solutions have you witnessed that make a difference in reducing food waste?
