Behind The Scenes 1/4: “Accessibility Stories” Jim & Jean: “A Couple’s Journey” Location: Heceta Beach, Oregon, USA Two years ago, Jim & Jean were excitedly preparing for his retirement. They had big travel plans. Then Jim was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder, combined with Parkinson’s disease. His mobility plummeted. Their life changed forever. As a disabled person, Jim’s biggest challenge has been to try and get out of the house to maintain some kind of normalcy. They needed an escape from his endless doctor appointments and physical therapy classes. And they found it at the beach via free track chairs (provided by David’s Chair). Their weekly visits have become pure rejuvenation as they get exercise and connect with nature via the therapeutic ocean waves, sunshine and fresh ocean air breezes. It brings pure happiness since they are together outdoors. What I loved about Jim and Jean was their overwhelming positivity. Despite Jim’s extensive physical and mental limitations, they were so appreciative of having each other and being able to visit the beach every week. It made all their challenges and hurdles fade away. And while Jim acknowledged to us that “he’s going downhill fast”, he jokingly said he “does what Jean tells him to do” and that visiting the beach gives them both a reason to go on. To make it another week. Thank you for providing this rare perspective in life. The power of optimism. The power of nature, the outdoors and simple love for each other.🦼❤️🏖️ ~ Rob Note: We are launching an exciting new “Accessibility Video Series” in 2025 to celebrate a diverse mix of amazing people. 🎥 Stay updated here: https://lnkd.in/d2cTX4n? #oregon #oregoncoast #accessibility #ada #storytelling #trackchairs #parkinsons #disabled Oregon Coast Visitors Association David's Chair Outdoor Mobility Systems #positivity #inclusivity GLP Films #davidschair Arica Sears Jake Steinman tricia roth #neurodivergence #neurodiversity Marissa Volkman Mel Barbour

"In this industry, we know travel is powerful. It allows us to learn from each other and the world and care about those things more deeply. What we found in Oregon went beyond a thoughtfulness around accessibility; it was cultivating a culture of inclusivity". Check out this story by Marissa Volkman in the latest Adventure Travel Trade Association news, where she shares her on-location filming experience focused on #AccessibleTravel. With the Oregon Coast Visitors Association leading the charge, “The People’s Coast” is setting this example for other destinations, reminding us that access to our planet is a right, and inclusion is a must. #inclusivetravel #oregoncoast #responsibletourism #accessforall 📸: Mel Barbour

🐘🐘🐘🐘 Continuing our theme of 'Rethinking Animal Tourism' this month, we wanted to share a film we made in Northern Thailand about a unique (and ethical) elephant experience. 🇹🇭 ChangChill, meaning "relaxed elephants" in Thai, shifted away from typical tourist activities like riding, bathing, and feeding elephants, transforming into a genuinely elephant-friendly sanctuary. Visitors observe the elephants from a safe distance without direct interaction, offering a more authentic opportunity to witness their natural behavior in a serene environment. 💕 "ChangChill’s work to offer the best living conditions possible to these elephants is a process, and we will keep evolving in the coming months and years. Throughout this time, we hope ChangChill can serve as a model for the other camps in Thailand to illustrate that a high welfare venue is beneficial for elephants, mahouts, tourists, and camp owners." 🌿Exploring Sierra Gorda: A Story of Climate, Conservation, and Reconnection to Nature 🌍 Travel journalist Kathleen Rellihan joined GLP on a visit to Mexico’s Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve where a pioneering carbon model pays local landowners to leave the forest alone, allowing nature to regenerate. This groundbreaking initiative, led by environmentalist Martha "Pati" Ruiz Corzo, shows how grassroots conservation can drive climate solutions.
