How can survivors of gender-based violence receive support and protection? 🧡 💬 A panel discussion hosted by GIZ last Thursday in Juba discussed the challenges faced by #survivors of GBV, the role of the judiciary in providing justice and protection as well as community and cultural dynamics in addressing GBV. As a powerful opening of the event, statements of survivors were read, and the panelists amplified that survivors of gender-based violence in South Sudan are significantly in need of assistance and safeguarding. 🤝The event provided a space for dialogue among key stakeholders to explore strategies for improving the protection and empowerment of survivors of SGBV and for fostering collaborative solutions. Panelists included representatives from the judiciary, police, international organisations and civil society. Panelist Alice Oleya Jino, Program Manager at the European Union, stated: “Gender equality and human rights are core values, mainstreamed in all European Union internal and external policies. Data Gordon recently led a powerful training on conflict de-escalation and #PositiveMasculinity for 16 of our male colleagues! ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 The in-house sessions were highly interactive: Role plays allowed participants to explore conflict dynamics, practice emotional regulation, and sharpen their communication skills 💬. Data also introduced practical relaxation techniques to help everyone manage stress and stay calm during challenging situations 🧘🏽♂️. 🗣️"This training is so timely! Redefining positive masculinity can lead to healthier relationships, stronger communities, and a more inclusive world.", said one participant. Another participant shared, "The training empowered me to embrace emotional intelligence, challenge harmful stereotypes, and build a culture of respect, equality, and support for all." 👏🏿 ❤️ The discussion on positive masculinity sparked deep conversations about cultural values—both the positive and negative—and how they shape the lives of men and boys. These reflections led to meaningful talks on how to challenge harmful stereotypes and create a healthier, more supportive version of masculinity. 🚀 The County-Based Trainers Pool #ToT is a wrap! Over the course of 12 days, participants from six partner counties enhanced their skills to train local government administrators. The key capacity building areas were rural council management, citizen participation, rural development, community-based conflict resolution, public financial management, and induction training. Domestic violence isn’t just a private matter – it’s a form of SGBV and needs to be addressed in the community 💔. It affects women, children, and entire families, and acts as a significant barrier to peace and development in South Sudan. We believe it’s time to break the silence and the stigma surrounding GBV. We need to #SupportSurvivors and #PreventGBV from happening.🙋🏾♀️🙋🏾♂️ GIZ South Sudan has held community workshops to help individuals recognise signs of abuse, learn about the causes and effects of domestic violence, and understand the importance of seeking help. At the basis of all these topics is the goal to foster an environment of support and empathy within the community. Playing sports is fun - and it’s also a great tool for promoting understanding, respect and equality. In our Sport for Development #S4D activities, we promote #FairPlay and #PositiveLeadership to challenge harmful gender norms and foster peaceful coexistence among young people.
