About us
Hello! I am GeekyGirl Karin Rex. If you're seeking an incredibly creative instructional designer or elearning developer with mad writing skills, or a remarkably delightful virtual facilitator, you found me! I am a professional facilitator specializing in virtual classroom delivery as well as an instructional designer/developer focusing on elearning and virtual classroom designs. I have 25+ years of experience with a global clientele. For organizations that want to take their face-to-face training into the virtual classroom (Zoom, Adobe Connect, WebEx, GoTo Training, etc.) or have them redesigned as asynchronous e-learning (Captivate, Storyline, Rise, Lectora), I develop engaging and appealing experiences that deliver solid learning transfer. I developed 3 storytelling classes for SAP. The Art of Persuasive Storytelling (90 minutes). The Art of Persuasive Storytelling Hands-on Workshop (120 minutes). And Storytelling with Data (60-minutes) focusing on incorporating data into business stories. I facilitate these courses several times each month. Courses were also translated into Cantonese. I also provided train-the-trainer coaching for the Chinese facilitators. I work closely with Association for Talent Development, our industry's largest and best global organization for talent development managers, trainers, instructional designers, performance consultants, and workplace learning professionals. I redesigned more than 30 of ATD's face-to-face certificate courses for the virtual classroom. In doing so, I got to work with some of the very best learning and development SMEs on the planet. I created a new certificate program for ATD on the topic of Writing for Instructional Design and Training (for both the Face-to-face and virtual classrooms). I also have been facilitating numerous ATD certificate courses in the virtual classroom for 13+ years, including Master Instructional Designer, E-Learning Instructional Design, Instructional Design, and more!

Prior knowledge is like Velcro for your brain.

In my ID classes, I often speak about stimulating prior knowledge as an important part of learning (usually when discussing Gagne or the ROPES model). As it turns out, prior knowledge really is the ultimate Velcro for your brain! The more you know, the stickier it gets. This article by Dr. Cynthia Nebel explains it well. Example: Novices: "Is that a horse piece in chess?" Experts: "Ah, the knight's fork tactic!" #learning #instructionaldesign #knowledgeispower #priorknowledge #geekygirl

I am a long time Adobe user (and Adobe Community Expert), and I've never seen them do a deal like this. Adobe Express is an all-in-one content creation app with generative AI features designed to be commercially safe. It’s easier than ever to create social posts and stories, videos, flyers, and logos. All in one app, available on web and mobile. And now a team membership that is a steal! https://lnkd.in/esH5ppUf

I love my job.

Happy 32nd anniversary to Geeky Girl, LLC! (AKA me...LOL) The very best part of being in business for myself since 8-18-89 are the people I've met along the way. I'm grateful to realize how many of my current associates and clients are people I've known for more than 20 years. I'm also grateful for the new business partners who breathe fresh air into my business lungs. You all inspire me to do my best every single day. Failure is never an option when you have that kind of support. I love what I do and am never bored a day in my life and for that I am very, very grateful. #BusinessAnniversary #Gratitude

I look like a baby here! 1998 - 26 years ago! I had just written a course and book called Internet Search Techniques (for Dun & Bradstreet or maybe Skill Soft?)

TBF (IFYYN) - that time I was interviewed by the New York Times about internet search techniques... thank you Matt Lake! (Danny Sullivan)

AI conversations are happening everywhere! Lately, I've been wondering whether or not AI tools can give me a way to streamline (and possibly enhance) the needs analysis process. As it turns out - it CAN! In this #ATD article by Dr. Alaina Szlachta Szlachta, PhD and Jody N. Lumsden, they share how AI can help practitioners gather insights, strategize, and prepare for complex needs assessments, leading to more effective training interventions. I enjoyed the insights this article shared, the plain language writing used, and the fact that they did an experiment comparing apples to apples. Check it out!

Words can be wielded like weapons!

I believe the ability to write persuasively and use rhetorical devices for good can be a true differentiator for instructional designers using ADDIE. When we write our needs analysis reports and design documents, we are trying to get buy-in from our stakeholders. We want them to agree that our proposed (training) solution will achieve the desired business outcomes. When we name our programs and write course descriptions for an LMS, we want the course to sound enticing to our learners. When we develop materials (participant guides, slides, job aids, infographics) for learners, we want buy in from them as well. We have to deliver the WIIFM to persuade them that the (change/new process/new product/new concept/attitude change) is EXACTLY what they need. Here's a recent article on the topic from Mental Floss: https://lnkd.in/gAVhiYKR There are a few devices mentioned that I didn't even know existed!
