🚶♀️🚴♂️ Designing for walking and active transportation not only boosts health but also property value! Walkable areas encourage exercise, reduce obesity, and improve market performance. 📈 A 10-point increase in Walk Score can raise commercial property values by 5-8%, and even a 1-point increase can add $300-$7,000 to home prices per unit. See what the leadership at the Center for Active Design are reflecting on this season. Discover powerful insights and inspiring stories from 2024 that highlight key themes like driving health, sustainability, and the future of the built environment. 🌟 #HealthyBuildings #Sustainability #CfAD #HealthMatters
As 2024 draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the intersections of health, sustainability, and the built environment that have shaped this year. It’s been a privilege to engage with these issues through my work with Center for Active Design and Fitwel Certification System, and I wanted to share five compelling articles that highlight key themes that resonated with me over this past year. 🏢 The Case for Healthy Buildings. The 2024 Healthy Buildings Barometer underscores how sustainable building practices are no longer a luxury but a necessity for health and well-being. As the demand for healthier spaces grows, we see the transformative potential of thoughtful design on both human and planetary health. Enjoyed this overview of the Healthy Buildings Barometer from World Economic Forum https://bit.ly/4gvP6xc ✒️ Policy as a Health Catalyst: If enacted, policies like congestion pricing can drive meaningful health and equity outcomes. Insights from Center for Active Design into these initiatives demonstrate how cities can prioritize people over cars, fostering healthier, more equitable urban environments. https://bit.ly/3Dqhy4X 🏡 Tackling the Affordable Housing Crisis: The housing crisis is a pressing issue that affects health and well-being across the U.S, and around the world. This article on Kalamazoo, a city I know and love because it's where my mom grew up, highlights the challenges—and the opportunities for innovative solutions—to ensure everyone has access to stable, affordable homes. https://bit.ly/49Os5Tm 👯 The Power of Partnerships: Unique collaborations, such as hospitals investing in affordable housing, show how cross-sector partnerships can make a tangible difference in communities. These efforts remind me that impactful change often requires thinking outside traditional silos. I found the partnerships featured in this article especially compelling given the work I participated in at Center for Active Design several years ago exploring how the healthcare industry could support the development of high quality affordable housing thanks to funding from The Kresge Foundation Article: https://bit.ly/3ZLGyep CfAD Report: https://bit.ly/3ZO97Yw 🌳 More Trees, Fewer Cars: Paris’ ambitious climate plan to replace parking spaces with trees is an impactful step toward addressing urban heat, reducing emissions, and creating healthier public spaces. Nature-based solutions like these highlight the importance of integrating green infrastructure into urban planning, and just another reason Paris continues to inspire. https://bit.ly/3P8jyBd Each of these stories emphasizes the role of collaboration, innovation, and bold action in creating a healthier, more sustainable world. I’m inspired by the progress we’ve made and look forward to continuing this work towards a healthier future in the year ahead. #HealthyBuildings, #Sustainability, #AffordableHousing, #UrbanPlanning
