We can’t avoid changes in how the planet is already responding to rising temperatures and climate change, but we can tackle the biggest problems with emerging technologies that are being commercialized now and in the next five years. I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position on the Solubag Board of Directors as the Exit Ventures investor representative. Solubag is a leader in the development of environmentally sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics. Founded in Santiago, Chile, the company developed and patented a proprietary raw material that replaces traditional plastic in single-use products such as shopping bags, dog waste bags, utensils, cups, bubble-wrap, etc. Solubag's products dissolve in soil or water over a few weeks or months, are non-toxic, and eco-friendly, offering a viable solution to the global plastic waste problem.

I'm thrilled to announce that Exit Ventures has led a Series A round investment in Solubag! Solubag has patented its revolutionary, proprietary formula to produce film bags (such as grocery or shipping-envelope bags), non-woven fabric bags, and firmware (such as utensils, straws, cups, etc.) When Solubag's products are discarded, they require no recycling or separation from other forms of waste, as they dissolve completely and harmlessly in water or soil in a few weeks to a few months. And importantly, Solubag has achieved price parity with plastic, facilitating rapid global adoption. Take a look at this video. Solubag's products dissolve immediately in hot water, as shown here. But they can last days in normal use with regular contact with water. So, take the bags out in the rain with confidence! But no microplastics, and the products are certified food grade, so the environment is safe when they dissolve in landfills (or unfortunately end up in surface water--but they will dissolve harmlessly there!). And of course, as always, Exit Ventures works with strategics to validate the technology of our pending investments, and Solubag is no exception. Two strategics (and a major customer) participated in our due diligence, both are excited about the solution, and one strategic even offered to buy Solubag! Ali Zaidi from the White House and Bill Nye in the same meeting! I love #NewYorkClimateWeek! Fascinating meeting yesterday with Ali Zaidi, Assistant to the President and White House Climate Advisor. Ali spoke about how the IRA has made the US a world leader in climate investment when it was a laggard before that, how the US has been a contributor in getting China to monitor and reduce its methane emissions, and he discussed the buildout of the US EV charging infrastructure. Bill Nye The Science Guy was also there, and talked about how kids need to develop a passion for something by the time they’re 10 years old. So get your kids involved in something they enjoy early! And he confirmed the earth really is round, contrary to some opinions. Lol. Jason Grumet was also there, CEO of the American Clean Power Association. He talked about things we can do to accelerate the clean energy transition. He also mentioned that there have been 580 new clean power facilities built and 300,000 new clean energy jobs created in the last several years. That’s impressive! Avik Dey, CEO of Capital Power Corporation talked about how the grid load is increasing overall, and it’s just not AI data centers. Electrical load growth is is a critical issue in the next several years, as individuals and companies who want new power connections are being told in some areas it might be 6 months to 3 years or more for a new power connection. Are brown outs or mandatory load shaving a possibility in certain areas in a few years?? This is why Exit Ventures is looking at tech applications in this area. Huge demand for peak shaving. I met with Agnes Dasewicz and Ashley Thomas from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation this morning as part of an informal industry advisory board for the DFC. The advisory board discussed various ways the DFC can more effectively meet its strategic goals in deploying over $9 billion of total capital and $500 million of equity to catalyze the most pressing challenges the world faces today, including climate. I’m really impressed by the DFC’s desire to become as efficient as possible in deploying its capital, and what they are doing in deploying that capital.
