Great post from our Director of Utilities, Jason Shafer. Understanding the correlation between storms and power outage performance is critical for advancing resilience. At Disaster Tech, we complement this research with PRATUS, which integrates historical weather data, real-time forecasts, and AI-driven impact models to improve outage prediction. Are you ready to learn more about how PRATUS is helping to build resilience? Send us a message to continue the conversation, or visit our website to learn more.
As part of our research to develop power outage prediction models and conduct climate vulnerability studies, we examine a number of historical data correlating weather hazards to outage performance. In this example we show two significant southeasterly/southerly wind events on either coastline. Both of these storms produced widespread power outages at similar wind gust magnitudes, illustrating this type of storm morphology (warm, wet, mild in midwinter) as being more vulnerable. Contact us at Disaster Tech if you're interested in learning more about how work like this can improve your storm preparedness and climate-informed planning.

Based on our research at Disaster Tech this graphic depicts US rankings showing the top states at most chronic risk of power outages from wet snow icing. This is largely based on the frequency of occurrence, a measure of populating weighting and tree cover characteristics that were computed at a county level and aggregated up each state. Slow moving mild rain to snow nor'easters show a strong regional Northeast US signal. #wetsnow #poweroutages
