In 2024, AI frequently made headlines as the technology became more accessible and more integrated into everyday tasks. But what does the explosion of AI tools mean for the health care sector? At #GDHF2024 we asked some of our colleagues and partners to reflect on how #AI is already changing health care delivery on the African continent and what the global health community can do in the coming year to help ensure AI tools are safe, effective, and accessible for African health care settings. What key actions do you think are needed to accelerate the effective use of AI-enabled tools for health in 2025? About us
Digital Square brings partners together to improve how the global community designs, uses, and pays for digital health tools and approaches. We work with innovators to advance adaptable, replicable tools that are designed to work together seamlessly. We work with governments and country-based technology experts to strengthen local capacity to implement and manage digital health programs. We work with donors to identify new ways to invest that ensure long-term success and align with country priorities. By strengthening the coordination among these partners, Digital Square reorients the market to better match tools and approaches to the needs of countries and communities. Digital Square is a PATH-led initiative funded and designed by the United States Agency for International Development, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and a consortium of other donors. This LinkedIn page was made possible by the generous support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development. The contents are the responsibility of PATH and do not necessarily reflect the views of USAID or the United States Government.

As #digitalhealth matures and becomes more widely implemented, a stubborn gap remains: evidence. Are the interventions improving health outcomes? Which are the most cost-effective? A new opinion in Devex by our PATH team members Tara Herrick, Peder D., and Laura Edison Kallen, MPH explores these questions and provides an overview of a new Digital Square at PATH research supplement on the impact, costs, and cost-effectiveness of digital health interventions in Oxford Open Digital Health. 📰 Read the op-ed: https://lnkd.in/eVb39J-s

From December 4–6, the Digital Square team joined the vibrant community of digital health leaders at the Global Digital Health Forum in Nairobi, Kenya. It was inspiring to see the event hosted in Africa for the first time, showcasing the region's innovative leadership in digital health transformation. Through engaging sessions and conversations, we explored topics like building climate resilience, AI for inclusive health, and how coordinated investments in digital public infrastructure can help health systems adapt to the challenges of today and tomorrow. We asked five of our colleagues to reflect on their experience at the forum and suggest actions they hope the digital health community will take in 2025. As we reflect on the rich insights from #GDHF2024, we’re energized to continue driving collaboration and innovation in digital health. Integrating health and climate data is an essential step in building climate resilience. We're excited to partner with these brilliant organizations on this important issue.
Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, and the urgency to protect vulnerable communities grows daily. We’re proud to co-fund Digital Square at PATH with Wellcome Trust and work alongside World Health Organization and World Meteorological Organization to advance digital solutions that help address climate-driven health risks. By building resilient, integrated health systems, we’re driving a shared vision for a sustainable future where communities can adapt and thrive. #ClimateHealth #HealthEquity Read more about this new project. https://lnkd.in/et8PJXu5

At #GDHF2024 last week, the Digital Square at PATH team led a session on localizing and managing immunization system and user requirements documents (SURDs) using the WHO DAK. The session was based on the team's experience customizing SURDs for #Malawi, #Ghana, and #Tanzania under the Digital Innovation for Pandemic Control (DIPC) project. Facilitators guided participants through key aspects of the localization process, focusing on adapting two key DAK components: user personas and business process flows. Participants then engaged in group exercises and discussions, sharing their experiences and enhancing their practical understanding of the importance of strong requirements. Thanks to everyone who joined us and made for such an engaging session! 🌍Climate meets health at #GDHF! 🌡️ Earlier today, leaders from Digital Square at PATH, Wellcome Trust, The Rockefeller Foundation, World Health Organization, and the WHO-WMO Joint Programme for Climate and Health took the stage to spotlight how #DigitalPublicInfrastructure can strengthen health systems against the growing challenges of climate change. Dr. Joy Shumake-Guillemot, DrPH shared a game-changing insight: only 23% of ministries of health currently use climate and weather data to track climate-sensitive diseases. This highlights a massive opportunity to integrate climate intelligence into health surveillance systems and build resilience where it’s needed most. The future is here, and the tools to protect it are within reach. Let’s bridge the gap for healthier, more climate-resilient communities! ➡️ Learn more about our climate health work: https://lnkd.in/etaBbZqv #GDHF #GDHF2024 #ClimateHealth

Today at #GDHF24 we are excited for conversations highlighting how PATH is advancing safe, ethical, and effective use of AI for health through rigorous research, cross-sector collaboration, and supporting local innovators to develop localized AI solutions. Resham Sethi, PATH Senior Program Officer for Digital Health, South Asia, will participate in a panel on fostering south-south collaboration among policymakers, healthcare professionals, and technology innovators, to explore how #AI4Health solutions can be effectively scaled and implemented in low-resource settings. Additionally, PATH’s Chief AI officer Bilal A Mateen will moderate a panel focused on current research trials in Nigeria, Kenya, and Rwanda that are exploring the appropriateness and effectiveness of Large Language Model (LLM)-enabled tools to support primary health care workers to make better clinical decisions and provide better care. This research is helping advance the global health community in its thinking about how LLMs can be localized to be used effectively and ethically by frontline health care workers. Learn more about this LLM research and our consortium of partners: https://lnkd.in/g3xygpn2
