Cozen O'Connor lost a legend yesterday. Stephen A. Cozen, the founder of this firm, passed away at age 85. Steve was many things to many people — an advocate, defender, counselor, leader, family man, and philanthropist. Steve was a remarkable role model and inspiration. He was loved, adored, and greatly respected by everyone. He was a visionary who, together with Patrick O'Connor, marshaled remarkable intellect, legal talents, irrepressible energy, and confidence to transform a four-lawyer insurance firm into a full-service, nationally recognized legal powerhouse. Steve was proud that Cozen O'Connor stayed true to his founding principles of hard work, perseverance, ingenuity, loyalty, fairness, philanthropy, and service. He also never ceased to remind everyone that a sense of humor keeps people grounded, no matter how large the firm grew. Cozen O'Connor is dedicated to continuing Steve's life work and expanding it beyond what he had envisioned. Steve's passing is a profound loss for the legal community, Philadelphia community, Jewish community, and many more. More than any verdict, ranking, or accolade, the community that Steve imagined and helped build will be his most lasting legacy.
