The latest UN Environment Programme report titled Emissions Gap Report 2024: No more hot air … please! sounds a clear call - countries need to bring much stronger commitments in their next Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) ahead of COP30. Achieving 1.5°C means cutting emissions by 42% by 2030 and 57% by 2035. Without this increased ambition, the world is on a path to 2.6-3.1°C, threatening people, planet, and economies. There’s still hope! According to the report, solar, wind, and forest solutions can help us achieve the 1.5°C target - but this requires strengthened NDCs, aligned whole-of-government approaches, intensified global cooperation, and bold private sector action.
