    3 Types of Domains That Will Never Generate Orders The Secret to Website Traffic Success When building your e-commerce store, the first step isn't website development - it's choosing the right domain name. A good domain can accelerate your rankings, while problematic ones can severely impact your website's growth. Let me share some domain selection basics based on my personal experience and mistakes. In 2009, I launched what turned out to be a highly unsuccessful e-commerce website. Despite SEO being less competitive then and Google's algorithm being more lenient, our site simply wouldn't rank no matter how hard we tried. We were baffled for a year until we discovered the truth: the domain had been blacklisted due to previous spam email activities. Three types of domains that will never perform, no matter how much effort you invest: 1. Domains banned by registrars for malicious email activities 2. Domains blacklisted by antivirus software for previous malware 3. Domains penalized by Google for excessive spammy backlinks How to Choose a Quality Domain? Here's my proven process: Step 1: Initial Domain Selection Look for domains that are: - Simple and memorable - Relevant to your industry/products - Have some age (Google has a 3-6 month probation period for new domains) - Bonus: If the domain previously hosted similar products, you might inherit some domain authority Practical steps and tools for domain research: [Technical steps remain the same, adapted for e-commerce context] Step 2: Background Check Critical step! Verify if the domain has any red flags through: - Email blacklist check (mxtoolbox.com) - Malware history check (virustotal.com) - Spam backlink analysis (backlinkwatch.com) Pro tip: I once found what seemed like a perfect 5-letter domain, but background checking revealed a history of toxic backlinks. Always do your due diligence!     Lessons from a SaaStr Superstar: Scaling Stripe to Enterprise Excellence I had the privilege of attending the SaaStr conference recently, where I heard an incredibly insightful talk from Jeanie Pyun, Chief Business Officer at Stripe. Her expertise in scaling companies to enterprise success was on full display, and here’s some of the key takeaways: 1/ On Signals for Moving Upmarket: - "Your existing customer base is pulling you up market" - as startups mature, their needs become more sophisticated - "You start to get early wins in enterprise that are meaningful" - landing a big enterprise deal is a clear sign to scale upmarket 2/ Commit Fully or Don't Bother: "You can't dip your toe in. You're either wearing a pilot or you're not." Successful enterprise expansion requires a company-wide commitment, not just a sales team initiative. 3/ Focus is Critical: - Identify your Ideal Customer Profiles and the specific verticals where you have the strongest product-market fit - "Be all over" those target industries - attend their conferences, get referenceable logos, build deep domain expertise 4/ Customer Obsession, with Discernment: - Understand core customer needs, not just nice-to-haves - "Have discernment" to prioritize development efforts that unlock the biggest customer value 5/ The Math Matters: "If you don't have a hundred-line item, bottoms-up spreadsheet supporting your revenue model, you'll be less effective in 2023." Mastering the unit economics is essential. These insights were invaluable - a masterclass in navigating the shift to enterprise sales.
