Since 1960, Strasbourg, France has been one of Boston's Sister Cities. Last month, Alia Hamada Forrest, Director of Business Strategy, represented the Mayor's Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion at the 80th-anniversary commemoration of Strasbourg's liberation. During her visit, Alia met with the Mayor of Strasbourg, Jeanne Barseghian, and delegates from Strasbourg's other sister cities Dresden, Germany; Stuttgart, Germany; and Leicester, UK. She explored Strasbourg's innovation ecosystem, connecting with representatives from BioValley France, Nextmed Strasbourg, and Kaleidoscoop, a co-working and collaborative startup space. The Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion looks forward to strengthening the collaboration between Boston and Strasbourg and learning from new connections made during Alia's visit. Fun fact: Strasbourg is famous for its world-renowned Christmas Market and is referred to as "la Capitale de Noël"—the Christmas Capital of Europe and the world. #globalaffairs #sistercities #strasbourg #boston

City of Boston | Economic Opportunity and Inclusion Cabinet reposted this
Thank you to Janelle Nanos and Boston Globe Media for the opportunity to share the successes of the City of Boston | Economic Opportunity and Inclusion Cabinet under Mayor Michelle Wu. In just a little over 1,000 days: — We’ve awarded >$25 million to 1,200+ small businesses — One of those programs, the SPACE grant, supported 90 business owners (75% POC, 65% women-led) and will be responsible for creating 800+ potential new jobs — We launched the most expansive Legacy Business program in the nation — We doubled contract awards to women- and POC-owned businesses in just 1 year — We spent >$100 million in contracts with POC businesses in just 1 year (1st time ever since the city began tracking) — Because of the work of my cabinet colleagues to make this a more livable, safe, clean, walkable, business-friendly city, we’ve lured companies like LEGO, Lilly, ArkeaBio, and EVPassport to Boston That was just the first 1,000 days. Can’t wait for what next year will bring so that we’ll have the chance to continue transforming the city where I grew up into the one we’ve always known it could be. Click the link below to watch the full interview and to meet one of our SPACE grantees, Mo’Rockin Fusion, which is currently housed in the laboratory of innovation, Boston Public Market Association.
Bold Types: Shuttered storefronts. Empty office towers. How do you rebuild a city’s economy in the wake of a pandemic? That’s the challenge Segun Idowu, Boston’s chief of economic opportunity and inclusion, has been tackling since he arrived at City Hall three years ago. And he’s found no shortage of solutions, from the city’s grant program that places small businesses in empty storefronts, to the 225 new liquor licenses created for Boston’s restaurant scene, to the high-profile score of bringing Lego’s headquarters to town. https://trib.al/l1tE7j6

Congratulations to Blue Mountain Jamaican Restaurant on their grand opening in Mattapan! Blue Mountain Jamaican Restaurant has also worked with the City of Boston's Office of Small Business, receiving technical assistance as well as new signage through the ReStore program and support through the Re-FRESH program. Congratulations to Russ & Mimi's on their grand opening in Roslindale this morning! Russ & Mimi’s is a neighborhood market that brings the finest natural wines, local brews, and gourmet snacks to Boston’s Roslindale Village. The market was founded on the idea of being a one-stop-shop for all culinary needs throughout the day: whether that be coffee to fuel the morning, a gourmet sandwich for lunch, or picking up grab and go items on the way home for dinner. As a second-round recipient of the City of Boston's SPACE Grant program, Russ & Mimi's is looking forward to breathing more life into the Roslindale food and beverage community. Visit Russ & Mimi’s at 16 Birch Street in Roslindale—only a short walk from the Roslindale Village stop on the MBTA Commuter Rail! #cityofboston #roslindale #roslindalevillage #boston #economicopportunity #spacegrant
