About us

The Boston Foundation is one of the nation’s first and most impactful community foundations, with $1.9 billion in assets. Partnering with community members, donors, the public sector, businesses and nonprofits, we exist to close the gaps caused by our city’s greatest disparities, to advance economic justice, and to help build a better Boston. We collect data, commission research, share knowledge, develop dynamic programs, fuel new ideas and fund change. Our work informs public policy, catalyzes conversations and advocates not only for change, but for repair of the historical harms of inequity. Ultimately, we aim to support, contribute and create well-being and opportunity within our communities. TBF is also one of New England’s largest grantmakers, supporting nonprofits in Greater Boston through our endowment and working closely with our donors to support nonprofits locally, nationally and internationally.

In this video, hear the success story of a Haiti Development Institute (HDI) grantee that is transforming lives in rural Haiti. GREDEL, a food processing social enterprise, has provided critical support to 56 manioc farming families. They help community farmers grow more food and provide them a market for their production, creating wealth in the community. Their processing facility turns raw cassava into higher-value products like cassava bread and cakes – multiplying the income families can earn from their crops. This is just one example. HDI makes grants and provides coaching that empowers resource-poor communities and their leaders to increase agricultural productivity, invest in productive assets and infrastructure, and build revenue generating enterprises.

  • "The needs of our community are constantly changing, and with flexible funding we're able to meet those needs in the moment." In this video from our Pathways to Equity series, TBF Program Officer Candace Burton and VietAID Executive Director George Huynh underscore the importance of flexible funding to empower nonprofit partners to identify and meet critical community needs, reflecting our belief that those closest to the work are best equipped to determine how resources can and should be allocated. TBF's Safety Net Grants program provides flexible, general operating funds to social service organizations that respond to immediate and essential needs for marginalized communities and vulnerable residents. Thanks to George Huynh and the team at Vietnamese American Initiative for Development (VietAID) for opening their doors to us and thanks to EmVision Productions for showcasing our partnership and approach to supporting the needs of community.

  • During this season of gratitude and generosity, we know that giving is on your mind! So, we asked our expert Program staff to share key partner organizations that would benefit from your support. We encourage you to consider a contribution to one or more of the organizations in the guide linked below, listed by themes ranging from affordable housing, arts & culture, basic needs, children & youth, climate, health, immigrants & refugees, and much more. • The Boston Foundation is proud to partner with the City of Boston and numerous other organizations in the announcement today of the Boston Acquisition Fund, a new innovative fund aimed at addressing Boston’s housing crisis and protecting residents from displacement. Our housing challenges cannot be solved unless we work together across sectors to promote affordability, protect tenants and create more housing throughout Greater Boston to provide stable, safe and affordable homes for all to thrive. Thank you to City of Boston and Michelle Wu for their work prioritizing this important issue.

    • TBF President and CEO Lee Pelton speaks at the City Hall announcement of the Boston Acquisition Fund.
  • "The question is: how can we, as a city, embrace and amplify arts and culture in a thriving way?" At TBF, we aim to answer this question by building relationships with the residents, entrepreneurs, artists, culture makers and workers who make our communities stronger; sustaining BIPOC/community-owned spaces; and providing equitable opportunities to collective wealth. In this video from our Pathways to Equity series, TBF Director of Arts and Creativity Catherine T. Morris is joined by the co-founders of Just Book-ish, Porsha Olayiwola and Bing Broderick, to celebrate the opening of their bookstore in Fields Corner and highlight the need for accessible, protected and equitable shared spaces to bring community members together. Our deep thanks to Porsha and Bing for their partnership in this video and to EmVision Productions for showcasing this key part of TBF's work.

  • “We are here to ensure that young people are able to take advantage of multiple high quality career building opportunities regardless of who they are.” Through investments and partnerships like our founding support for the Center for Economic and Social Justice at Roxbury Community College, we seek to do just that by connecting students and job seekers with careers and resources that allow them to shape the career and lives they want. In this video from our pathways to equity series, TBF Associate Vice President Antoniya Marinova and Luciano Ramos, Director of RCC's Center for Economic and Social Justice, lay out the planned work of the new Center and highlight the powerful message of housing it in the historic Dudley House. Thank you to Luciano and the team at RCC for their collaboration on this video and thank you to EmVision Productions for showcasing this work!
